We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jonathan Reddoch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jonathan below.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and horror author. I write mainly horror flash fiction: that’s my dead and butter. I am also a co-owner and publisher at Collective Tales Publishing. We publish speculative fiction anthologies. We love working with new and upcoming authors. Many of our writers are first-timers so I really enjoy seeing them get excited for their first publication. Our most popular books are Collective Darkness and Darkness 101: Lessons Were Learned, which features 101 stories that are each 101 words in length exactly. We’re always looking for new stories so anyone who is interested in submitting should check our website for open submissions: CTPfiction.com
Have you ever had to pivot?
Growing up, I read a lot of classic science fiction. I really liked Heinlein and Wells and Mary Shelley. I wanted nothing more than to be a sci-fi writer. I wrote dozens of sci-fi short stories and submitted them to all the big magazines and anthologies. But no publishers were interested. Eventually, I got too busy with my career and home life that I stopped writing and submitting. To this day I have never sold a science fiction story. However, back in college, I sold a dark fantasy poem to a magazine. And my dark fantasy story Padua’s Eyes won a writing contest. It wasn’t until ten years later that I began to realize my horror and dark fantasy stories were popular. I leaned into the darker side and have found a lot of success pivoting.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met Elizabeth Suggs when I hired her to help with house cleaning and child care. We bonded over writing. I hadn’t been writing in almost a decade but she invited me to her writing group. There was a presentation on poetry that sounded interesting. She was already working on a horror anthology called Collective Darkness. I dusted off my old story Padua’s Eyes and submitted it. She accepted it into her book and eventually, I began helping to edit and publish it. Thus was born a successful collaboration!
