We were lucky to catch up with Jonathan Nichols recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jonathan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
Just this week a client that gets there vehicle detailed about 3-4 times a year was explaining how much she appreciated having her car detailed thoroughly, And she hasn’t seen anyone detail a vehicle like I do… This was normal. However what I did not expect, was for the client to share that, “me detailing her vehicle was better than her going to the spa.”
It was at this point, I realized 1: the value that seeing someone meticulously detailing your vehicle has. The time, effort & thought that goes into it. It wasn’t that I was the best Detailer ever- it was just the fact that the service was getting done with care, skill and consistency and it was VISIBLE. Realization number 2: A clean, organized and fresh smelling ride, home, or office space is invaluable to our state of mind.
Not to mention our health, both physically and emotionally.
The moral of this story is, whatever you do, do it because you understand why you are doing it. Not just because your paid to do it, but you understand the benefit of what your doing and how a job or service well done effects those on the receiving end.
At the end of the day, people that see you and your work can tell if you are working because you care or just because it’s a job.

Jonathan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Mobile Clean was started as a mobile detailing service as something to help me get through the summers while driving school buses during the school season.
Starting out, it was interior detailing only and over time increased to exterior detailing, including paint chip and scratch repair, paint correction and ceramic coatings.
Mobile Clean’s Goal is to provide mobile or other convenient options, such as vehicle pick up and drop off for auto care services, with a consistent level of service regardless of the job type or size. The goal is to put people at ease by knowing who is working on their vehicle. And knowing what level of service to expect, each and every time.
What sets Mobile Clean apart from other detail services? Mobile Clean focuses on their clients and not what all the other detail services are doing.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn feeling the need to let people talk me down in pricing.
Like many detailing business, prices start off very cheap in the beginning. As time goes along, and detailers realize the cost included with having proper equipment, vehicle maintenance, caring for your own medical expenses, the stress the body takes on a daily bases when detailing. The cost of repairs if something is damaged in the detailing process, advertising, continued learning such as classes and travel, taxes and being able to put something away for more unexpected expenses. Not to mention retirement.
7 years later, these lessons are starting to sink in more.
Part of the benefits of not trying to provide very cheap service is that the clientele are a bit different in that they appreciate your value more and you are treated accordingly. And if equipment goes down or needs maintenance there’s less chance of going into debt for these things.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Having a Google Business listing has been a consistent source of new clients especially during busy season.
Referrals have been a great source of new clients as well.
