We recently connected with Jonathan Machen and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I’m an independent Artist who believes in making every genre of music to bust the stigma of one platform. I also break the mold of a typical Artist in the industry because I write real music about real life tangible things, memories, and passions.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been making music since I was 13. I was burned over 80% of my body at 2 1/2 years old. I overcame recovery and persevered to share stories of my own hardships and adversities, all while fighting being teased for being different. I express myself in every way musically. My music ranges from… Country, pop, bluegrass, R@B, Gospel, Hip Hop, Alternative and Soul 🎵
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was burned by boiling water when I was 2 1/2 years old. I had 4 blood transfusions and seven skin graphs. Mostly 2nd and 3rd degree burns which meant constant cleaning and upkeep to prevent infection. I also had to wear pressure garments to keeps the burns tightly compressed for healing (full body suit). I was told I wouldn’t live a normal live and would require 100’s of surgeries. My mom bought land in Central, Louisiana with 5 acres. So I would walk, jog and run everyday, which made my burns rip and tear causing me to bleed. Everyday I would run for hours only to go inside covered in blood. Time heals everything and god gave me the strength and resilience to overcome but water tried to take away from me… I chose to live. As I choose to stand out and be a rebel in the music industry.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I would have to say a multitude of great authors, composers and creators have impacted my business and brand and how I create. I’m thankful for Motown artists, the Beatles, Johny Cash, John Denver, Jim Croce , Michael Jackson, James brown, Ottis Redding, Even ozzy osbourne and Pink Floyd, guns and roses I could go on and on.y childhood was dancing in our living room with the record player with my mother.
