We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jonathan Kim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Hope, in its essence, is a delicate and intricate thread woven between the existence of where we are and where we want to be. From the student chasing acceptance into a top-tier university to the professional working tirelessly to land their dream job, hope is the steadfast compass guiding us toward a better future. Yet, we often overlook the weight of the journey—those long hours, setbacks, and relentless effort required to transform hope into reality.
At Hope Music Studios, my mission goes beyond helping clients achieve their musical aspirations. I am here to guide them through the journey, ensuring they not only reach their goals but also build the resilience and endurance necessary to persevere. Each student embarks on a personalized music plan, one designed to make their goals feel not only attainable but deeply relatable. Whether they’re beginning their musical path or refining their skills, I encourage them to embrace the process—because progress is built on honest effort and a commitment to the craft.
I see myself not just as a music educator, but as a coach—crafting strategies, setting realistic goals, and helping students play to their strengths. While many dream of performing under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden or being adorned with accolades, I remind them that the true goal is simpler, yet profound: to develop a genuine desire to pick up an instrument and create music. Music is more than performance; it’s a powerful force that builds community, ignites creativity, and speaks to the deepest parts of our souls. It connects us in ways words cannot. Life itself is filled with music, and my role is to help my students fine-tune their ears to hear it and, ultimately, contribute to its ongoing symphony.

Jonathan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My musical journey began with a transformative performance at Carnegie Hall with my middle school orchestra, followed by playing for my church youth band. These early experiences ignited a lifelong passion for music, leading me to perform at venues across Southern California, including the Anaheim Convention Center and The Roxy Theatre, alongside talented artists like Trevor Davis, Richard Sellers, and Nathan Brown.
Throughout my career, I have embraced dual roles as both a performer and an educator. Since 2010, I have dedicated myself to teaching music as a private instructor and at esteemed institutions like La Habra Music and Clavier Music Academy. My diverse musical background allows me to inspire my students to explore their own passions.
I hold a Bachelor’s in Music from Biola University and a Master’s in Theology from Talbot School of Theology. This unique combination enables me to blend musical expertise with spiritual leadership, and I have had the privilege of leading worship at various venues, including Hume Lake Christian Camps and several churches in San Diego.
Starting as a Music and Creative Director for churches, I expanded my influence by offering private and group lessons within my community. My multi-instrumental talents and varied experiences allow me to teach a wide range of musical genres. After over a decade in church ministry, I founded my own music education business in North County San Diego, growing from 12 to 50 students while teaching guitar, drums, piano, voice, and bass guitar.
I am passionate about helping my students discover and enjoy their love for music, empowering them to share that joy with others.
At Hope Music Studios, we don’t just teach music; we celebrate it. Our passion lies in harnessing the transformative power of the arts to forge meaningful connections that resonate across cultures and communities. Music, after all, is a universal language that transcends barriers, and that belief is woven into the very fabric of our mission: to create engaging, personalized music education that brings people together.
What makes us stand out? Our tailored approach. We understand that every student is unique, which is why we offer a diverse range of genres to cater to individual interests. Learning here isn’t just effective; it’s a blast! As students build foundational skills and confidence, I challenge them to tackle pieces that might seem intimidating at first. This not only boosts their self-esteem but also deepens their appreciation for their chosen instruments.
Community is the heartbeat of our philosophy. Our annual recitals and music camps are more than just events; they’re celebrations of talent, joy, and shared experiences. Picture this: a lively recital featuring Korean cuisine, an open coffee bar serving up fresh pour-over brews, and a supportive audience cheering on our performers. Each student selects pieces that resonate with them, making every recital a unique spectacle. And here’s the kicker: the audience gets to vote for their favorite performers, who walk away with cash prizes for their dedication and talent. Not to mention, we also reward the audience with music prizes—just last time, we gave away a Taylor guitar, a bass guitar, and a selection of guitar picks and straps!
Our music camps elevate this communal spirit to new heights. They invite the community to dive headfirst into a week of creative exploration, where campers engage in ensemble singing, learn rhythmic patterns with bucket drums, form rock bands, and even create fun, memorable music videos. Each camp is uniquely tailored to reflect the interests and creativity of its participants, ensuring a distinctive and enriching experience.
At Hope Music Studios, we aim to transform music education into a joyful, communal journey. Our approach not only imparts essential technical skills but also nurtures a deeper connection to music and fosters a sense of belonging within a vibrant creative community. This is what truly sets us apart, as families share how much their children thrive and love learning music with us. Curious to learn more about our programs? Let’s connect and ignite a passion for music in you or your child!

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been through word of mouth and reputation. This foundation is built on a few key principles:
Confidence in Offerings: Being confident in what I have to offer is crucial. When I believe in my services and the value they provide, it resonates with clients and encourages them to share their positive experiences with others.
Competitive Rates: Setting fair and competitive rates demonstrates the value of my services. When clients see that they’re receiving quality for their investment, they are more likely to recommend my offerings.
Flexibility in Services: Offering flexible services tailored to individual needs is another important factor. This adaptability shows clients that I’m committed to meeting their specific requirements, making them more likely to refer me to others.
Client Check-Ins: Regularly checking in with clients to assess their experience helps build strong relationships and trust. This not only enhances their satisfaction but also encourages them to share their positive experiences with friends and family.
By focusing on these strategies, I’ve been able to create a loyal client base that actively promotes my business, leading to organic growth and an ever-expanding network.
