Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jonathan Downs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jonathan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Yes I’m extremely happy as a business owner. However; that doesn’t mean everyday is an easy one. Some days are harder than others and the stresses of owning/operating a growing business can feel overwhelming at times. Being an entrepreneur isn’t for the faint of heart or those of little faith. I have the responsibility of not only keeping the doors open, lights on and jobs running smoothly. I also have the responsibility of looking after my workers and putting food on there tables. These are just a few examples of the many hats one wears being a business owner, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
I never think about what it would be like having a regular job. Why you may ask. Well because I’ve had plenty of regular jobs over the course of my life. From starting at the bottom to running multi-million dollar projects, but none of them left me feeling fulfilled. I always felt like I was destined for more and envisioned myself being my own boss. Finally after being undervalued, missing time with my family and just being fed up. I made the decision to risk it all and start my journey as a business owner. I didn’t want to look back at the end of my life and regret not chasing my dreams. I figured, what’s the worst that could happen? I fail and go back to a 9-5, but at-least I wouldn’t live with the regret of not knowing or trying.
Since making the decision to carve my own path. Life has become exponentially better. In the beginning it was just me taking on smaller jobs and figuring things out. As my business and reputation grew I began to tailor our services to exactly what I wanted my business to be. Which is providing high-end custom home renovations. Ranging from full bathroom, kitchen, basement and entire home renovations to new construction. Owning a business has blessed me with the ability to not only make as much income as I want, but more importantly to spend more time with my beautiful family and make more memories together. Which is really all I ever wanted. I’m able to make my own schedule and adjust it accordingly. I’m able to chaperone field trips and never miss an important moment. The pros heavily out weigh the cons.
In conclusion; starting my own business has by far been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. If you’re willing to put the work in and spend the time perfecting your craft the sky’s the limit. The best advice I can give is to keep putting one foot in front of the other and don’t be afraid to take a risk. Everything you’ve ever wanted is just on the other side of fear and if you’re going to do something don’t do it half ass. Keep your word, show up when you say you will and communicate with your clients. Everything else will fall into place.

Jonathan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jonathan Downs. I’ve been in the construction industry most of my adult life. However; before I began my career path I wasn’t always a productive member of society. For most of my early 20’s I struggled with drug addiction. I spent time in and out of jail and rehabs. Eventually I reached the end of my rope and was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I went to a faith based long-term treatment facility. That’s where I found the love of God and a higher purpose. After that I began working in the trades in South Florida. Eventually I met my future wife and had a beautiful daughter who changed my life forever. In 2018 we moved back to my hometown of Bardstown, KY. For the next 4 years I worked for different construction companies, learning many different skills. Finally in 2022 I started my business and haven’t looked back.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My advice for managing a team is simple. Live by the golden rule. Treat others how you want to be treated…. In my experience if treat your team well they will in turn take care of you. Don’t be disrespectful or speak down to someone who works for you or if they make a mistake. Instead show them the right way to do it and do it in a way that isn’t demeaning. Also don’t be afraid to get down in the trenches with your people if you want their respect. Don’t be the boss that only sits in the truck or stands and watches you work while playing on their phone. Sometimes you’ve got to get a little dirty and rub shoulders with your workers to let them know you can. Also tell your people when they’ve done a good job. Let them know they’re appreciated and valued. And if you want to attract high-quality workers pay well.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Keeping my word. Being honest. Showing up when scheduled. Communicating with my clients throughout the entire project. Delivering on promises and just being a legend at what we do.
