We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jonathan Chicas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
The legacy I want to leave is to be remembered as someone who changed the narrative of my life. I made some wrong choices and took some wrong turns, but I was able to change the trajectory by believing in myself, trusting in God, and refusing to give up. I want to be known as a man of faith who represented God well and did my best in everything I put my hands to.”

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Jonathan Chicas, a professional boxer turned coach, business owner, and community builder. I grew up in San Francisco, and like many, I made some wrong choices early in life, but I was able to change the trajectory through faith, discipline, and the power of boxing. Boxing didn’t just teach me how to fight in the ring; it taught me how to fight for my life, my family, and my purpose.
I started boxing at 17, fought on ESPN, became a BKB champion, and ended my professional career with 15 wins out of 18 fights. After stepping out of the ring, I felt called to pour back into my community, helping others discover the confidence, discipline, and mental toughness that boxing gave me.
Now, I run Jonathan Chicas Boxing, where we offer one-on-one training, small group classes, and youth programs centered on boxing. We don’t just teach people how to throw punches; we teach them how to fight for themselves in life, build discipline, and grow in confidence. I’ve worked with high-level professionals, youth, and individuals looking for fitness, self-defense, or simply a way to better themselves.
What sets us apart is our personalized approach. Every person who walks through our doors is seen and met where they are, whether it’s an executive looking to relieve stress and sharpen focus, a teen who needs confidence and structure, or someone in recovery looking for a healthy outlet. We keep our groups small to ensure everyone receives proper attention and coaching.
I’m most proud of being able to live out my faith through my work, showing people that change is possible no matter where you started. I’m also proud of creating a safe space where people can grow physically, mentally, and spiritually while building community.
What I want people to know is that our programs aren’t just about boxing—they’re about becoming the best version of yourself. If you’re looking for a place to challenge yourself, grow in discipline, and get in the best shape of your life while being surrounded by a supportive community, that’s what we’re here for.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had a fight in Las Vegas where I came in as the underdog against the champion. It was for an organization called BKB Boxing, and they flew me out there for the fight. I was able to win, become the champion, and bring the belt home, proving that even as the underdog, I could come out on top.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I first began my carpentry journey about 10 years ago and eventually joined the union. I completed a pre-apprenticeship program, joined the union, and then embarked on a five-year apprenticeship program. Unfortunately, I was laid off during that time, which prompted me to pivot into teaching boxing full-time. Initially, I was uncertain about how I would make ends meet and cover my daughter’s school expenses, but I had faith in God’s plan and eventually managed to build my business from two clients to now 23.
