We were lucky to catch up with Jonathan Bennett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
As a follower of Christ, I have had and continue to have defining moments in my professional career. Being a first-generation college graduate, I struggled just to set a bar in my family. Due to the love and support of my parents and family, I was able to finish my race. There were several times when I felt inadequate and wanted to quit. I left a hometown where I was in the majority race and attended a college where I fell into the minority race. This was a culture shock, at times overwhelming but defining. It was during this stage of my life that the added pressure began shaping me for my career today. That exposure, time of struggle, and self-doubt that I endured, now allows me to help people from all walks of life. From the depressed customer at my fast food restaurant in undergrad to the hurting father in my support group during grad school. I have been told “no” on so many occasions, but the defining “yes moments” were always life-changing and would seem to take me to the next level. This was and has always been my motivation to continue moving forward, seeing what doors God would open next. I am always excited about the next “yes.”
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a Licensed and Ordained Minister of The Gospel, husband to my beautiful wife Martika, and father to my great son Jonathan III. I was born in Charleston, SC, and raised in the small rural town of St. Stephen, SC. In my profession as a Licensed Counselor, I provide therapy and counseling as a primary service to children, teens, adults, and families. In my years of work, I have observed that some children are not necessarily in need of counseling or therapy but that they lack mentorship. Hence, this led us to begin bridging the gap by also providing mentoring services, producing great results. I have been in the Mental Health field for over 10 years and I counsel individuals who struggle with a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, anger, substance use disorders, relationship issues, marital problems, behavioral issues, and family issues. I did not come into the field of counseling to just help people cope. Instead, my goal has always been to help all of my clients overcome their struggles and go on to live meaningful and fulfilled lives.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back I would undoubtedly select the same field. I believe the biggest mistake one can make is to do what they are good at. I do not seek to counsel individuals because I am good at it, but instead, I counsel because I believe it is what I am supposed to be doing.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
God has strategically placed me among some of the leading agency representatives in my area. They have imparted wisdom and have spent over 8 years equipping me to be where I am today and to be known by many in my community. My community members and partners have significantly supported our business and encouraged a positive reputation.
