We were lucky to catch up with Jonathan Agustin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I felt that pursuing a career in performing arts would be incredibly risky. Having a Filipino background especially, lots of people growing up persuaded me to go into healthcare for the money and stability. That was an unfortunate canon event in my life because I failed so many science classes in college and ended up working in Human Resources outside of college. After not having fun at the job and disagreements with a new boss I took a risk and decided to pursue dance and acting full time. It has been 7 years since then and I couldn’t be happier!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Of course! So I got into dancing when I was in college. In high school I focused heavily on sports specifically running, basketball, and tennis so I was kept busy but I always had an interest in dance just watching videos on TV or YouTube. In college I wasn’t playing any sports and felt this was the perfect opportunity to try a new skill that I’m not comfortable in. I took a workshop and joined a team on campus and fell in love with the art from there. I started getting into acting later into my dance career out of pure interest of being in the industry for a few years and found what an amazing world TV/ Film can be! Some of my credits include commercials, short films, theme parks, super bowl. live events, and festivals.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is the people you meet. You meet tons of incredibly talented people who either do the same thing as you or something completely different but still within the industry. You appreciate how much work goes into creative projects and how many people it takes to bring something so amazing to life.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Lots of my non-creatives friends struggle to understand the work schedule that goes into being a creative. I would like people to be aware and be patient with creatives because lots of the times our work schedules are inconsistent. Jobs and auditions could easily pop up the day of or the night before that canceling plans may actually be quite often for people like us. It is never anything personal but it is hard to turn down opportunities because they do not come so often.
