Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jon Savage. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Turquoise Community. You might notice me signing ‘turquoise’. This is an LSF, French sign for turquoise, a specific color integral to community. You might notice this artwork isn’t finished. Yes, you can watch the artwork in progress with me while I give an explanation at the same time during each step. This is the turquoise I was talking about. Why did I pick turquoise? Of course. I’ve observed the color turquoise and from my experience, I feel that the true meaning behind it is intuition. Intuition is required in a community, so they can all come together and intuitively understand one another based on there experiences. You know, often times when you see a community founded, it’s based on common experiences and common knowledge based on intuition to foster cooperation. Why? If they have already experienced oppression, how can we reverse that oppression to turn it into celebration? It has to be based in the community. Pink, of course, means love. A community needs a lot of love from it’s people. People give love to the community to fulfill it so others can take what they need. Why did I paint gray? It’s really representative of focus. What happens around you might be out of your control, you can only focus on what you can do. That’s why I picked gray, it’s not completely black or completely white. That’s “Turquoise Community”! You might be wondering what the meaning is behind the protective gloves. They are a metaphor for making sure you and your sign language are safe.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Growing up with a photographer/videographer father and hair stylist/craft artist mother, both who had deep roots and aspirations, I had fueled my artistic creativity for as long as I can remember. I became more fascinated with the arts during my childhood years. I fell in love with all types of media/visual arts, such as photography, video editing, cinematography, acting and painting in different times and places. Throughout my Deaf childhood, I had remained passionately devoted to educating Deaf people about the linguistic, social, political and cultural issues of the Deaf community by traveling across the states and countries. Late 2011, my desires and aspirations to be an artist were once again fueled. I began creating contemporary art paintings based on people and classical subjects that inspired me by using abstract, bright colors and clean cut painting style. Currently, I’m using my paintings/photographs as life stories that are reflected in my visual journey.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my view, the best thing society can do to best support artists and creatives in a thriving creative ecosystem is to understand, share and talk with them accordingly to how they can support them in their individual endeavors. Understanding the artist and creative is important.
