We were lucky to catch up with Jon Marquez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jon, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry
Right now, I’m noticing two significant trends in the fitness industry: more mobility and stretching videos on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok and the rise of AI workout programs that offer low-cost ways to start or improve a workout routine.
Studies show that about 80% of adults have mobility or flexibility issues. This often happens because we spend so much time sitting, especially at desks, which can lead to rounded shoulders and tight hip flexors. Rounded shoulders can cause neck, upper back, and shoulder pain, while tight hip flexors can lead to a tilted pelvis, back pain, and tight hamstrings.
More coaches on social media are creating videos with different stretches and exercises to help with these issues.
These programs are convenient and can be used at the gym or at home; some even offer online classes. However, while these online programs help reach more people, they’re often too general and don’t consider individual needs. For example, online programs with promises like “30 Days to a Handstand” may be unrealistic for most people. Without personalized guidance, some people could feel disappointed or even get injured. Conversely, coaches can help make workouts specific to each person, considering current mobility, past injuries, and fitness level.
I’m also seeing an increase in AI-driven workout apps like PlanFit AI, FitBod, and Coachify. These apps can help people create routines, especially when returning to the gym after a break. AI programs are great for getting started, but they can’t fully understand each person’s unique body. For instance, someone with tight ankles might struggle with squats, leading to poor form or reduced results. A coach, however, could teach them helpful ankle and hip mobility exercises and start with a simpler version of the squat to build strength safely.
Overall, social media and AI technology are creating new ways for people to work out, which is excellent for the fitness industry. However, coaches need to help clients understand the benefits of personalized training. Tailored workouts allow people to improve their form and target specific needs, helping them reach their goals more safely and effectively.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a first-generation Latino American born and raised in Florida. My journey in health and wellness began as a personal passion—discovering weightlifting and yoga in high school opened up a whole new world. I eventually moved to New York in 2013, where I worked at a startup. While I found success there, I knew something was missing. That was when I realized my true purpose was to help others find balance and harmony through fitness, so I left the corporate world and became a personal trainer.
As a trainer, I take a holistic approach to fitness, which is about more than just physical strength. I focus on my clients’ mental well-being, too. I aim to help people build strength, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment through personalized programs tailored to their unique goals and needs.
My training style includes:
* Traditional strength training.
* Calisthenics.
* Something many people might not expect—flexibility and mobility work.
These are vital to becoming more assertive and feeling better in everyday life.
What sets me apart is my commitment to working with each client right where they are, both physically and mentally. I avoid trendy fads and focus on what will help each person feel their best. I provide encouragement and motivation for clients who might be at a crossroads, like considering leaving a 9-to-5 job to pursue a true passion. I know that if they can push through mental blocks at the gym, they can tackle other significant challenges, too.
I am proud to see people make breakthroughs in ways they didn’t think were possible. My mission is to guide anyone looking to become physically and emotionally healthier and help them create a life that brings them joy and strength daily.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
In 2019, I realized I wanted to pursue a career outside the startup world, but leaving wasn’t easy. I knew I wanted to be in fitness, but I kept hesitating. A steady paycheck felt safer than jumping into the unknown, especially in an industry where income can be unpredictable. In fitness, you’re not just coaching—you’re managing your own business, which includes prospecting, accounting, programming, and more. It wasn’t very safe, and I wasn’t sure I was ready.
At the time, I was burnt out, barely sleeping, and full of self-doubt. I took time off to figure out what was happening and quickly realized I wasn’t happy. I felt stuck, and even though I could see the other side of the hill, I was afraid to leap. I ended up working with a somatic coach who challenged me. He would ask, “Why are you afraid? What do you think will happen? Why are you making excuses? No one else will push you—you must trust yourself and jump.” For me, that was huge; I’ve always been afraid of falling, and here I was, letting that fear keep me from moving forward.
One day, something clicked. I woke up and said, “No more excuses. Today’s the day.” I emailed my boss, thanked him for all his support, and told him I wasn’t coming back—I was finally ready to pursue my calling.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth is the most effective way I’ve grown my clientele. Even though I have a background in marketing—where you’d usually focus on an omnichannel strategy to reach leads—I found that personal referrals work best for me. I’ve tried social media and even boosted workout videos, but it’s a crowded space that requires a big budget to stand out.
Most of my clients come from people sharing their experience training with me with friends or family. Not all of these conversations lead to new clients, but the ones who do are truly ready to commit. I’ve even gained clients when my current clients post vacation photos where they look and feel fabulous, and someone asks about their journey. Just recently, I closed two new clients from one client’s photo!
To encourage referrals, I offer a discount for any client who brings someone new and gives the new client a discount for their first month. It’s been a great way to build a loyal, committed client base.
