Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jon Couch. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jon, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
My wife and I like to travel and often when we visit new places, we like to take a local tour to learn more about the local history. Most of those tours consist of a guide that paints a picture of those areas through stories and experiences. Sometimes they would have pictures of the old buildings or people that they were talking about. I thought it would be kind of interesting to be able to see some of those historic pictures on your own phone while taking a tour or walking around on your own. This is where this all started, I decided to try to put something together to see if this would work.
Jon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been working for a company for 3o plus years and have gotten to the point that I wanted to try something different. I have been trying to think of ideas that I could start while continuing to work my current job. I have always been interested in the history of cities, specifically buildings that used to be there or have been there for many years. It was a way to create something that others might be able to use and enjoy. I wanted to be able to share this with people that might be interested in this as well.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I have had this idea for many years but just never took the steps to create this or take it to the next level. I started reading a few books and listening to a podcast about starting a side hustle. This gave me the motivation to moved forward. I thought maybe this is the time to try it, what do I have to lose other than a little of my time putting it together. I hear a lot of times people wish that they would have taken the chance to try, if they failed then at least they gave it a shot. I didn’t want to get to the end of my life and say I wish that I would have just tried.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
We were out and about one day here in Denver and I saw a sign that said “Create something every day, even if it sucks”. I love that quote and have been trying to follow that in the last few months. I am sure that some of the stuff that I create does suck, but I have created a few that I am proud of. Rarely can you sit down and create a masterpiece on your first try, you will create a lot of stuff that sucks. But that is all part of it, keep creating and keep moving forward. I think too that this does not just pertain to art, this could also pertain to writing, blogging, painting, anything that involves creativity. Just create something for others to enjoy. I do enjoy creating art from what I see and experience through travel and life.
