We recently connected with Jon Bouffard and have shared our conversation below.
Jon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
One thing that I continue to invest time and energy into are relationships. Especially, the relationship with myself and those around me. I don’t think I was ever particularly excellent at anything I did but, one thing I knew I was good at was reading people. From an early age, I knew that the people I chose to be around would determine a good or bad outcome in the future. The same thing applied to finding my life partner. I knew if I was going to settle down with someone that it had to be with someone very special. That person had to be career driven, passionate, and strong-willed. All these traits are things that I highly valued. When I met Alex I knew right away that she possessed all of these. From the beginning I told Alex we were going to get married (as creepy as that sounds), I was crazy about her! As we began to date and spend time together we would constantly have conversations about our future. Topics of choice: “what’s our 5-year plan”, or “what type of business do we want to run”. At the time, Alex and I lived in NC. Alex was working for a media company filming and editing weddings and I was working full-time as an Occupational Therapist. I knew from the first wedding film she showed me that she was destined to become an amazing cinematographer. I can’t tell you specifics of the date or time but after hundreds of conversations going back and forth, I finally convinced Alex to start her own Media company! Not even a year of dating went by and we had packed our bags and moved to NY to start the company. I continued to work as an OT in NY while Alex got the business up and running. To fast forward a bit, each year the company kept growing to a point where I was able to let go of my healthcare job and come on full-time with our media company. To this day Alex and I are still growing whether it’s with our media company or other avenues of media (Instagram, TIKTOK, YouTube, Facebook). We have further aligned ourselves with great people that are now part of our team. To wrap it up, Investing in yourself and the people around you is truly one of the best things you can do for yourself. Having others around that have common goals, interests, and aspirations can make or break your success in business.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
To break it down and simplify it, I am an Occupational Therapist, turned cinematographer, turned social media creator. Getting into the last two occupations was definitely persuaded upon me by my wife. At a certain point, I was working full-time as an OT and helping Alex film weddings on the weekend. We became so busy that I ended up coming on Full-time with our company Madison Grey Media. When Covid hit and our weddings were pushed to the following year Alex began making content on TikTok just for fun. I would have to say that I had no interest in joining in with her on making short-form videos but, I did see it as something we could do creatively together. I would have to say our communication skills set us apart from others. I can’t say we haven’t had our battles but, being able to hash out and resolve our arguments quickly and amicably is somewhat of a feat that always surprises me.
I am proud of so many things. I am proud of my wife’s ability to consistently stay creative when it comes to our content creation. Her mind is a Rolodex! I swear it’s like she has a never-ending list of ideas. I am also very proud of the fact that we have stayed driven and consistent with everything we do even in the craziest of times. We juggled running our media company while providing daily short-form content on TikTok, as well as recording/editing weekly podcast episodes. What I am most proud of though is how real we are. We have never tried to be something we are not and it shows through our content. I think that is why our followers relate with us so well because we show that we are just regular people going through the same life experiences as everyone else.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
2021 as a whole really tested both of us. I would have to say that I have never known my true worth ethic and commitment to something more so than that year. At the time Alex and I had bought a house in Virginia but, had over 30 weddings booked primarily in New York and New Jersey. The issue was that all of our weddings in 2020 had to be pushed a year due to Covid restrictions so we essentially had double the weddings that we normally would film and edit. On top of running our media company and driving back and forth from VA to NY several times a month, we also were editing and posting TikTok’s daily, and podcasts weekly. To say we hit our threshold is an understatement. With that said though, I wouldn’t take any of it back (nor would I want a redo). That experience has taught us what we can accomplish and really showed us what we are made of.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Like a lot of millennials, I met my wife on Tinder! I didn’t know however that a simple swipe on my phone would lead to not only my future wife but also my business partner.
