We recently connected with Jon Blaq and have shared our conversation below.
Jon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
When I first started acting I would go on line and YouTube acting videos, order books about acting and film making and when I would get to be on set I would watch observe and ask questions, eventually I was able to take acting classes with my coach Patrick Ferrara. Not sure what I could have done to speed it up acting is a process so you just have to learn as you go. The skills I found most essential was the ability to focus and take direction. The biggest obstacle was finances because classes can be somewhat expensive but my coach happened to be offering free work shops and that was a blessing.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
To be honest doing music I always told stories in my songs and music videos. I had a friend who told me he thought I had great energy and could see me also acting so that sparked me to want to look into it more. Thankfully I got on some sets really early by people that were making their own indie films in the area Kilo Pugh and Morgan Flower chilld and also Michael Buie were some of my very first casting opportunities. From their I did a lot of theatre for a while and as I grew more and more film opportunities came. My first leading role was in a film called The Bridge by Brandon Bias. As time went on I got my first opportunity to produce for GoGetHer productions with Nachela Knox, then again with Nakesha Writes on her film What FairyTale. Those opportunities behind the camera really helped me grow, I’ve done sound, i’ve done some AD work, choreographed small fight scenes, helped develop stories and learned about marketing. The more I learn the more I want to know

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
a story that would represent my resilience is just the fact that once we finished Nachelas film Couch party is was a real process to get it edited and to a distributor. So many meetings and so many let downs in terms of waiting to get our movie out on to a streaming platform that at times it was very discouraging knowing we had finished product but no way at that point to get it out. But patience, endurance and belief that we had a great product won out and we got to a well known distributor and the feed back was amazing from viewers which made it all worth it

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part for me is taking something that was just an idea in my head and bringing it to life in the real world. I read a book by Napolean Hill called think and grow rich and he stated “anything the human mind can conceive it can achieve” that has always been a driving force for me
