Jolena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?

I love being a business owner, though like any role, it comes with both rewarding and challenging aspects. On the positive side, I have the flexibility to set my own hours and take time off when needed, which is invaluable as a mom of two young children and an active member of my Rotary club. However, there are also drawbacks. For instance, my business has two peak seasons that demand my full attention, leaving little time for social or family activities. Additionally, the constant mental engagement—where your brain is always “on”—can make it difficult to set boundaries and step away from tasks like checking emails or social media. At times, I miss the structure of simply clocking in, doing my work, and leaving for the day. My background includes eleven years in retail and several years in the corporate world, and while owning a business is a 24/7 commitment, it offers a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I didn’t experience in previous roles.

I’m the owner of Sun & Moon Balloon Design, a balloon décor company specializing in corporate event décor. My journey into this industry began with a passion for creativity and a love for bringing joy to others, which naturally led me to balloon design. We provide a wide range of products and services, including balloon arches, columns, garlands, and other custom installations for corporate events, product launches, and brand activations.

What sets us apart is our attention to detail and our commitment to making our clients’ lives easier by handling all aspects of event décor. We take the stress out of event planning by creating visually impactful designs that reflect the brand or theme, leaving our clients free to focus on other details. I’m proud of the relationships we’ve built with businesses and organizations, particularly in the Frederick and Howard County areas, and the trust they place in us to elevate their events.

Yes, my side hustle evolved into a full-time business. It began as a creative outlet, making balloon décor for friends and family while balancing my roles as a mom and corporate professional. Realizing its potential, I officially launched Sun & Moon Balloon Design. Building relationships with local businesses, particularly through the Frederick and Howard County Chambers of Commerce, was a key milestone.

Identifying peak seasons also helped me streamline operations and plan strategically. As the business grew, I transitioned fully to balloon design, leaving my corporate roles behind. It’s been a rewarding journey of growth, creativity, and learning, and I’m proud to support my family while doing what I love.

Building my reputation in the market has been a combination of delivering high-quality, creative balloon designs and providing exceptional customer service. I’ve always prioritized strong communication and reliability, ensuring my clients feel confident that their event décor will be seamless and impactful.

Word of mouth and repeat business have been powerful drivers, as clients know they can count on us to exceed their expectations.
