We recently connected with Joleen Green and have shared our conversation below.
Joleen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Has Covid resulted in any major changes to your business model?
Unfortunately, we had the pleasure of opening our brand new business, right in the smack dab of the pandemic. We started planning before the shut down and had to keep going, and ended up opening our first day July 17 of 2020. At that time it was outdoor dining only and changed from week to week. It went from outside dining only to take out only and then while it was outdoor dining, the Big Sur fires were going on also and was raining down ash on everyone’s heads they were dining outside. It was not fun. We started out open six days a week and quickly figured out….,just to stay in business, we had to go down to three days a week to save money. We did three days a week for two years. The pandemic really changed how we thought about business. It was too slow during the weekdays to stay open. Finally after two years we added one more day so we are open for days now and will never go back to six or seven..

Joleen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are surf and skate themed hot dog shack in Pacific Grove California. We sell gourmet hotdogs (such toppings as sauerkraut, sport peppers, kimchi, grilled jalapeños, nacho cheese, pulled pork, pimento cream cheese, etc. etc.) loaded tater tot’s, homemade chili, homemade macaroni and cheese, fried brussel sprouts with our homemade balsamic reduction, 14 flavors of Mariannes Ice Cream from Santa Cruz, beer, wine, champagne, and mermaid mimosas. We have live music in the beer garden every Saturday and Sunday from April to November . We pride ourselves on having fun here and want all of our customers to have a good experience.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Any job I had ever had I felt like the managers and the owners were always mean. The biggest lesson I have learned being the owner of Lucys On Lighthouse has been that you don’t have to be a “ C U next Tuesday” just because you own the place. I believe my employees have high respect for me because I treat them with respect also. I don’t want my employees coming to work and hating it. We all have such a great time here together. The music is playing we’re laughing we’re getting our work done and having a good time at the same time. And return it makes your customers have a good time and they want to be involved and laugh with you and come back many many times.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is a huge part of our business. It really grew when I hired a social media person, Alexis Everett. She makes everything look so fun and makes people want to come here to experience us. It is one of the only ways we get our information out there for live music and events going on and it seems to be working. We are always very busy.
