We were lucky to catch up with Jolea Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jolea, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think success is a combination of standing behind your work, embracing constant learning, and building meaningful connections with others. It’s not enough to simply be good at what you do; true success comes from taking ownership of your work, continually improving, and staying open to new experiences and ideas.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first got into photography from my lifelong love of art. I have always loved being creative and this was another medium for me to express myself and document the world around me. I graduated with a BA and a minor in Communication, but my magazine internships are where I learned the most. The variety in the assignments made me very well rounded in my capabilities.
Now I enjoy working with clients to help them create meaningful and fun images for their lives and businesses. I really get to know people and what they do, and it is so interesting to me to know their stories.
Artistically I really love working with light to create moods and messages. You can change the whole look of an image with the way light falls on a subject, and it takes knowing how to coax that out to create something truly remarkable. I try to make my love of art really translate here.
I am also a licensed drone pilot and have a lot of fun taking photos of real estate and landscapes, though food photography is my all-time favorite!
I know that I am lucky to have had such a long and fun career, and I am grateful.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I started my career right before the onset of You Tube – being able to watch a video on anything to learn. I am amazed at the wealth of information about any topic, in depth, immediately at your fingertips – so yeah, that would have been helpful early on lol. I also think getting out there and networking and being a part of your community builds awareness and trust in your brand. early on, I didn’t know to seek these out.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I am a strong believer in work ethic. I have always shown up on time and prepared, knowledgeable and ready to go. I stay in communication with my clients through each step to make sure we are on the same page and speak out when I think things could be tweaked. People hire me for me expertise so it is up to me to explain why something would work great vs be a problem.
