We recently connected with JoJo Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, JoJo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
When I was a senior in high school Covid hit. I spent the next year and a half locked indoors learning to produce over zoom, and attempting to continue pursuing music online. In the spring of 2021, two of my friends, Jessicca and Amber (who is also an amazing singer/songwriter), decided to move to Nashville permanently that fall and asked me if I wanted to tag along as their third roommate. That summer I took a three day trip and visited them in Nashville and decided to take a chance and move.
That September me and my dad packed up my car and drove 2,000 miles from my hometown in Portland, OR to Nashville, TN. It was definitely the biggest risk I’ve ever taken and to be completely honest it was really hard at first. I missed my family and friends and I felt really lost here, not sure of what I was doing or if it was going to work out. Thankfully over the past few months I feel like I have finally started to settle in. I’ve made some really great friends and have been co-writing and playing out as much as I can. So, in the end I think it turned out pretty good.

JoJo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always loved to sing. My parents love to tell everyone how when I was a baby I’d just hum contentedly in my crib instead of crying. My mom always loved music as well and I’ve been really lucky that my parents have always supported me and my dreams. As early as the age of two, my mom had me up on stage performing with her preschoolers. By the time I was nine, she enrolled us both in guitar lessons and when I wanted to quit because it was too hard or my fingers hurt, she never let me give up. I’m so thankful because it gave me the foundation I needed to start writing my own songs.
In highschool, I discovered my love for the 70’s and decided that I wanted my music to be reminiscent of that era. Even though my genre is Acoustic pop, I love to infuse the 70’s into the production. I started learning to do it myself during the Covid lockdown. Production is challenging at best and I am certain that it’s going to be one of those things that I will always be learning and growing in. Despite the difficulties, I’ve really enjoyed getting to learn the basics over the past few years.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is when people connect with the stories I’m sharing with them through song. I like to write from an open and honest place (even if the stories I’m telling aren’t mine or even if they are a little over exaggerated…) and I feel really connected to what I’m writing about. Getting to perform them live, or even releasing them, is both nerve wracking and thrilling for me because it’s so personal, but I feel at home on stage so when people connect with what I’m singing about it feels really fulfilling.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The answer to this question is actually pretty simple, at least for musicians. It’s really important to follow them on your favorite streaming platform, add their songs to your playlists, and if you really connect with one, share it with your friends. Follow them on all the social media platforms you’re on and interact with their content. You can also go out and support them when they are playing live shows and if you can, buy merch that they are selling. Even when some of these things seem pretty small it means alot to us creatives to see we have people who love the art we are creating and who are supporting us.
