We were lucky to catch up with Jojo Sayers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jojo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
One thing that I’ve noticed in corporate and among many small businesses is that over time, they lose the joy in business. Suddenly, we have all these rules we need to follow, and standards we need to keep. Something that JC Studios of Virginia is doing differently is prioritizing fun and joy in business. We do fun networking events, and we help business owners with their creative project development. With Notion, we also bring ease into business by creating a business brain. This allows business owners to think less and do more.

Jojo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started working from home because I wanted to be there for my kids. That led me to take an interest in writing jobs on Upwork, which led me to finding my own clients outside of Upwork. Since then, I’ve been working with a variety of clients, doing SEO work and blog management, email marketing and copywriting, and online business and brand management. All of those experiences made it difficult for me to “pick a niche” so I began to carve out my own path. Now I do creative consulting on the go, and I help business owners set up bespoke business dashboards on Notion. I’ve found that this really allows me to share all of my experiences and knowledge of the online business industry in a way that feels valuable and useful to others.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve been in a variety of fields, and this year I found myself and my family in a place where we needed a steady income so we could revamp and rebuild our business in a way that makes sense to us. So I ended up going back to work – getting a 9 to 5, so I could fuel and support our business in this new era. I’m also going back to school so I can further my understanding and knowledge of the business world.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I think in the beginning years of any business, you’re ready to hear and apply any direction or strategy to try to see results, and while that might work for a while (and teach you a lot about business), it doesn’t last long term. I think this year my biggest unlearning has been that every single business is going to do it different, call it by different names, and create unique strategies. Which is super interesting to see the variety of strategies that are out there and how each of them works for a very specific need or purpose.
