We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Johntay Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Johntay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I recently took a pretty big risk On the last movie I made. After I Paid for my first film out of pocket I swore I would do everything in my power to not use my own money To finance Another movie. So I searched & waited to find an investor, after a year I finally found one, but it turns out he wasn’t as serious as previously stated. So I was back at square one, in the hole from paying for the last film, and on top of everything else my personal life was completely collapsing around me, mentally, physically & financially. It came down to the choice of using my last bit of extra money just to put the deposit down to start filming, and worry about paying the rest after, Or pay certain personal urgent affairs…… And I chose to film the movie. So now it is in God’s hands, Let’s see if I land face first, or learn to fly!!

Johntay, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey, my name is johntay Jones, I also go by H or Hz (pronounced H-is). I’m a music artist (rapper), song writer (r&b, pop, country etc…), And a independent film maker, From Denver Colorado .
I got into movies & music when I was 16 years old. I was incarcerated in a youth prison, and it was there that I wrote my first full songs, and submitted my first movie script & short story, which finished 5th in a state wide competition amongst college students.
At this point & time my rap career is pretty much non existent. I can still operate at a high level, but I’ve learned too much too late, and now I m more so focused on songwriting & films. As I said I can write songs for any genre, And although I am fairly new to film making I can honestly say that I am ahead of the curve.
I know everyone speaks overly high of themselves, and say how they’re the best thing happening in whatever field they’re in, And society will say that’s the attitude you’re supposed to have. I on the other hand am more of a realist. As in I realistically am no where near the best right now. I don’t write the best songs, and I don’t make the best movies. But I can guarantee 1 thing, with the right team, finances, and opportunities I Will be One of the best and most successful Creators this 3rd rock from the sun has ever seen. Everything I’ve done so far has been pretty much on my own. I produced, directed, star acted in, self financed every film & wrote and conducted every song I’ve done. Filming movies that usually take 18 full days with full teams, in 2 days with 1 camera man,no scripts, just my direction.
Pretty much what I’m saying is, I am not the rule, I am the exception. I am like everything & nothing the world has ever seen. And all I want readers to take away from this article is, I am honored to meet you all & have you met me, and Remember my name, Cause soon it will be everywhere. God bless y’all!!

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Choose Talent over Popularity and fame. If society Gave more opportunities and support to People strictly based off of Their work being great, instead of putting resources behind mediocre work From Big names, The best products, and the best people would reach the top levels.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am trying to build something so successful, that my craft becomes my job, and creates jobs for all of my people,so we can work for and with each other. …. Financial Freedom!!
