We were lucky to catch up with Johnny Tea recently and have shared our conversation below.
Johnny, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
A defining moment for me was when my dad got diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer. I was still trying to figure things out for myself. Still finishing up undergrad. His last request before he passed was for me to get my Master’s Degree.
At the time, I wasn’t happy with it because I just wanted to be done with school. But looking back, it was the kick in the butt I needed, and it lit a fire under me and I’ve never looked back since.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a strength coach, trainer, manual therapist, and I help people accomplish their health and fitness goals. Whether be it for sports performance, body composition goals, or rehab/post rehab, the most important thing is establishing a starting point and trust with each other, lay out a play to accomplish the goal, and then execute it in a collaborative effort.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I truly believe in taking care of the people you’re currently working with, and they’ll take care of you. There’s a lot of buzz with marketing, but word of mouth is still king. What I’ve found if a client is referred to you, they’re more likely to have bought into your work, and it’s much easier developing rapport with them.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. What’s helped me retain clients is getting to know them on a personal level, in addition to doing a good job.
I want to know what makes them tick. What’s holding them back from getting to where they want to go. What are their hobbies. I think making your time together fun and productive helps. So basically emphasizing the “personal” in being a personal trainer.
