We recently connected with Johnny Sandoval and have shared our conversation below.
Johnny , appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Earning a full time living came from relentless practice, research, and being surrounded by artists that are on the same vibe.
I started playing with my uncles at the age of 7 years old. I played bongos and congas for special events in all of the halls and ballrooms around Miami, Arizona.
At the age of 12 , I joined a variety group based in Phoenix Arizona called the Amigos. We also played many special events and did world tours during the summer. We had our own bus, stage, equipment truck and all! This group was a life changing experience for all who made the audition. We had to train and learn to dance, sing, and play the show before performing.
After the Amigos at around 19 years of age I moved to Hollywood and attended MI (Musicians Institute). There were so many incredible teachers and students at MI that it seemed overwhelming until we figured out that everyone sounds great but different. It was not a competition. We all wanted to be the best we could be at our personal style preference while learning many other styles.
I began touring with Sister Sledge in many parts of world. We played arenas and festivals. I enjoyed touring the jazz festival circuit with Greg Adam’s. Since then I am still playing and booking special events. I have two albums one called Johnny Sandoval @conga and the other Skin and Bones Christmas.
I continue studying other subjects and enjoy trying to get different degrees and certifications. I am currently studying Guitar, Piano, Voice, Accordion, and producing music in my studio for artists world wide. I also dream to keep teaching and sharing everything I have learned.
I teach percussion and became a music therapist/healing artist during the pandemic. I love and cherish sharing my gifts!
Johnny , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Johnny Sandoval. Percussionist, music producer, recording artist, teacher, and healing artist.
My goal is to provide a genuine music experience and share my gifts in the most positive ways possible.
I want to empower people and realize how a nice musical experience can make unforgettable differences in our lives.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The aspect of art that has kept me in the business for so long is learning how to build and be dynamic in all aspects.
Being a resilient artist means creating places for your art to thrive and staying away from where your art will not thrive.
Be loyal to yourself as an artist and the financial aspect will follow. Always try to be where you are loved and respected!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is watching people transform into happiness. I love seeing the smiles and movement!
One of the most incredible aspects of creating is when musicians build long lasting relationships. We can feel each other’s musicality to the point of feeling majestic which in turn translates to the audience.
