Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Johnny Nicco Tapia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Johnny Nicco , appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started boxing alongside my brother, Johnny Lorenzo Tapia, at Team Tapia Gym in Albuquerque, NM. We trained under the guidance of our first coach, Jayla Ortiz, and my older brother, Salo Tapia, who played a crucial role in showing us the ropes. From the beginning, I learned that consistency is key to improving quickly. Never missing sparring sessions was essential in speeding up the learning process.
In boxing, I believe the most important skills are ring IQ and timing. Knowing when to throw the right punch is crucial, but equally important is having the ability to anticipate what’s coming next. Understanding the game before it unfolds gives you an advantage.
The main obstacle I faced in learning and growing in boxing was the fast-paced nature of life. Life’s demands and changes often made it difficult to dedicate the time and focus needed to continuously improve.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into boxing inspired by my father, Johnny Tapia, a five-time world champion, and with the continuous support and guidance of my mother, Teresa Tapia. She has been instrumental in sharing her knowledge of boxing and supporting my brother and me on our journey. I started boxing at the age of 16, training at the Tapia Boxing Gym. Since then, I’ve had seven amateur fights, with a record of 6-1.
What sets me apart is my unwavering dedication to push myself to the limit to grow as an athlete. The journey in boxing has taught me invaluable discipline, and I’m proud of the resilience I’ve built along the way. It’s this resilience that keeps me moving forward, both in my career and in life.
To my potential fans, I want them to know that with dedication, hard work, and staying true to yourself, you can achieve greatness. It’s not just about being successful in your career, but about becoming someone you can be proud of in all aspects of life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The legacy of my father, Johnny Tapia, and keeping the Tapia name alive in the sport of boxing is something I deeply value. I’m passionate about growing his brand while also putting my own individuality into it. Boxing is a family tradition for us, and it’s been incredible to watch the sport continue to grow and evolve between my brother and me. Together, we’re carrying on his legacy while building something uniquely our own.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to use your mind to create content and build brands is an incredible opportunity to express your creativity. It’s about crafting something that truly represents and showcases who you are as an individual while cultivating the artist within you. For me, it’s a way to bring my unique vision to life and share it with the world.
