We were lucky to catch up with Johnny Fletcher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Johnny, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The first moment I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally dates back to my elementary school days in Flint, Michigan. It was there that an art teacher introduced me to the world of drawing, and I was instantly captivated. This passion for art stayed with me through high school, eventually drawing me into the vibrant world of tattoos. In 2022, a turning point came when I noticed a local nonprofit in Flint initiating a mural program. I reached out to them, and with their guidance, my career as a muralist truly began. Since then, I’ve since had the incredible opportunity to create over 50 murals around the world, exhibit canvas shows, and sell various prints and merchandise, all while sharing my journey and passion for art.

Johnny, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Although many know me by my artist name, Johnny Five—a nickname that grew from my love for the movie “Short Circuit” as a child and being the fifth John in my family. This blend of nostalgia and personal history has been with me since childhood, shaping my identity as an artist.
My journey into the world of murals has been deeply enriching, far beyond the simple act of painting. What some might not know about me is my genuine passion for connecting with clients and communities through my art. The design process for a mural is personal, and as clients share their vision and preferences, true friendships often form. By the time a mural is complete, I frequently find I’ve gained new friends rather than just worked with clients.
One of the aspects I cherish most about mural painting is the freedom of being outdoors. Unlike being confined to an office or studio, painting outside invites the community to interact, observe, and engage with the art process. The spontaneous conversations and questions from passersby enrich my work and make each project a truly collaborative experience.
For those considering a mural, my murals aim to reflect the spirit and stories of the community, creating a lasting impact that resonates with all who engage with them.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In September 2023, I experienced a significant setback when I fell 15 feet off a ladder, hitting my head and dislocating my painting shoulder. It was a tough blow, especially with Michigan’s painting season coming to an end. Determined to recover, I dedicated myself to numerous medical appointments and physical therapy sessions. By spring, I was ready to paint again, although I faced the challenge of overcoming a fear that I might not regain my previous skill or confidence on a ladder. Through perseverance, I pushed through these obstacles, and looking back, I believe the experience helped me grow into a better artist.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, one of the most fulfilling aspects of being an artist is the opportunity to share my work with others. Art has the unique ability to convey emotions and stories, and there’s nothing quite like witnessing the impact it can have. When I see people encounter my art and watch their faces light up with smiles, it’s incredibly rewarding. Those smiles reflect joy, connection, and inspiration. It’s a reminder that art transcends boundaries and has the power to communicate with people in ways that words sometimes cannot. Whether it’s a mural that brightens a neighborhood or a personal piece that resonates with an individual, the ability to evoke such positive emotions in others is truly gratifying. Knowing that my art can bring a moment of happiness or spark a conversation makes the creative journey worthwhile and motivates me to continue exploring new ideas and sharing my vision with the world.
