Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Johnny Adolphson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Johnny, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Fine Art Landscape photographer from Heber City, Utah. Mostly self taught, I’ve learned the majority of my craft by trial and error, and just going out and taking photo’s regularly. A big part of what sets me apart is how I see and compose images. Often I envision a angle or a shot that may be and I may pass over a classic I’ve already shot to search for something new.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a fine art landscape photographer from Heber City, Utah. I’ve always appreciated art and photography, but became more serious about it in 2011. I originally started selling images trying to afford the equipment I wanted. In 2014 My wife Sherry and I started our small business selling landscape photography prints online. It started as a side hustle but has grown to become a fulltime job for both of us. We spend a lot of our time displaying our work at art shows, events, and vendor markets in Utah and around the American West. Our prints come on metal, canvas, acrylic, and paper. It’s rewarding and important to us to help folks select the right piece for their home. We offer local in home consultation and work with local designers to choose art. Living in Utah, I spend a lot of time shooting in the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains, also Southern Utah and the desert southwest. I travel to places like the Tetons, Eastern Sierra, Wind River Mountains, and Colorado Rockies. I love to shoot the classic scenes, But really enjoy finding new views and compositions and am willing to hike in the dark if I envision a shot.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, even though it’s my job, I’m grateful for the opportunity to chase my dream and vision with everything I have. Sometimes I’ll spend years returning to a spot or hike overland for miles in the dark just to get something right or how I see it. When people choose one of my images for their home, I enjoy telling the back story behind the image and love seeing the joy the work brings.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m on Facebook and Instagram. My Instagram grew steadily to about 50 K until about a year ago when the algorithm became more reel based. I’m definitely trying to adjust, but still focus mainly on posting stills, because that’s my passion. I have a Facebook business account. That allows me to invite people who like or comment on my posts. The main thing I do with my social media is I try to share something from how I felt or what I experienced getting the shot. These photographs are about moments and if I can describe the emotion felt, I feel that may help people make a connection with my work.
