We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Johnnie Jackson . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Johnnie below.
Johnnie , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Radio was something I always wanted to do. While living in Dallas in 2015 i internship at a few radio station through The school of recording arts out of California. I also worked for cumulus witch is the Head of 6 different stations in Dallas and Houston. 104.1KRBE to be essact.
About 2018 I relocated back to Houston. Where I began going live on air training with 1230 Kcoh radio. Then Covid hit and things starting to fall. At time I had my marketing company also. UNDER THE THUMB MARKETING. Things were not looking good.
Later after things begin to reopen. I took a hosting job at a Houston radio station. Things was going great. I had my show sponsor and was getting interviews.
I began to learned it was people there who envy me. After months went by. I stared to learn all the The game. I would find myself going home researching owning my own station.
Because I said to myself. If I see what’s going wrong here at this station ,and willing to help fix it and get out there in the streets and promote us and more .
I then had enough and left the station. Weeks sent by and I was off the . People was asking me what happened to my show. I told myself I have to do something. I refuse to let one disorganized station stop what I’ve been blessed with.
I just knew My move would be successful because of the fact I love helping people. Especially the local artists. We have too much great talent in our world that has gone unseen and unheard . Some of these people.this is the only shot at a good life and that could be life changing. They just have to be herd . With the connections I have . I have the resources for that .
So I started Mocity Radio. In may of 2022. I’ve build a strong team that I’m so thankful for . When you do good business and treat everyone fairly. You could never fail
Johnnie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well my background is entertainment which I started focusing more on while having my marketing company. I found it hard to work late At night promoting clubs and having to get up in the morning to do marketing for other businesses with a whole totally different work hours.
While promoting in the clubs is when I found my desire to promote up and coming Artist due to some of the Events clubs would have. Then came Grade A Radio where I hosted my own show. I would have Trending news and topics. I was also interviewing new and major artists.
I never thought I own my own station. That was not my dream. My dream was to be on the radio , but I guess God has bigger plans for me.
I currently own Mocity Radio we here we strive on business and artist growth. We have connected with a sister station in Atlanta 1057 the phase who has the same goals as us when it comes to the Artist.
We plan to connect with more like us to give these Artist the platform they deserve to be herd and blow.
I am so happy to have put together such a great team who sees my vision.
We are planning our big grand opening October 29th. Where we will have live Performance , games , rides , food trucks and more. This event is going to be big. Most of all . It’s free to the public. Missouri city is where I am from. We need things in our community for young’s ones . They are our future. Thai event will focus on that. As long as mo city radio is in business. We plan to hold more events like it. My goal is to on day build a place in my community for our kids and youth.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
To treat everyone the same. Treat people how you would want to be treated. Always be respectful and willing to help others and go the extra mile. I focus big on writing it down. Plan out your day on paper. Therefore you have no gaps to slip up.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I started Mo city radio out of my home in Missouri city Texas. In a room upstairs with no windows. Made just for a studio. We use to call it the dungeon. Anyhow, things began taking off. I’d go live and talk daily. I began receiving dms and emails about podcast rental. At Thai point I’m like that money. But I didn’t want just anyone coming into my home. That’s when I realized it was time to grow and get a office location. Here today here we are . Located in the middle of Missouri City broadcasting live.
