We were lucky to catch up with Johneri’O Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Johneri’O , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
I came up with my show Let’s Talk with Johneri’O Scott Talk Show & Blog because I didn’t want to wait for anyone. I knew I had what it took to be an successful host, media correspondent and blogger. I graduated with my degrees in Communications, Creative Writing, and PR, so getting myself out there and doing the work wasn’t hard. What was hard was getting people to see me, see my talent, see what I had to give. Coming straight out of undergrad and graduate school with those degrees, knowledge, experience was still not enough. I received sooooo many no’s and I got tired of he rejection. Creating my baby, my talk show, was one of the best decisions ever.
It gave me the experience I needed. It taught me how to pitch myself. It taught me the in’s and out’s to creating a great pitch, scoring that great interview, preparing for on-camera work, and it taught me how to dust myself off and to try again. I call it faith leaping and trusting yourself and your gut. Was it hard? Yes! Am I still learning? Yes, we all will forever learn.
Let’s not forget that I found out I contracted HIV from my partner right after undergrad, so I also dealt with emotional obstacles as well while following my dreams and creating a brand and outlet for myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There aren’t any resources I really per say wish I knew earlier. I only wish I did more pitching to bigger outlets. I allowed fear in the beginning to limit my reach. I would have continued contacting BET, or I would have did a little more research to find out about outlets like blavity, revolt, balleralert, etc. I also would have contacted individuals other than on email. I would have been heavy in dm’s and things of that sort because once I begun to do that, I grew as a brand, and learned more on how networking can really help grow you as well.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Lessons I had to unlearn was my faith and who I am as a person. Crazy right? I was raised in a single parent household, church was all I knew. It was a gift and a curse because I allowed those teachings to hinder my growth as a person which effected me in media when it came to clubs to network, music and parties. I had to realize that nothing was wrong with those things. I had to unlearn what is really right and wrong. Once I realized the reach I could have had if I went into those sectors, or if I went to the club as an example, that if that’s where the next best move was for the night because a music artist was there that I cold have interviewed. Missing opportunities to say the least.
I am in a new season of my life. Living more for me and my purpose unapologetically.
