We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Johnathan Pitts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnathan , thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Starting a business is difficult and draining and stressful lol but very rewarding and life changing…it started with an idea to do catering at a higher level and quality, researched companies and areas needing the service, found a safe and clean place to conduct business, and before I knew it I was ready to go

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Chef John, and I’m the owner and creative force behind Chef John Caters. I’m a personal chef, caterer, and culinary creative focused on food that is soulful, elevated, intentional, and memorable.
I was born and raised in Washington, D.C., with Southern roots through my mother, and that combination has shaped the way I cook. My style blends comfort, culture, bold flavor, and refined presentation. I got into this industry through hard work, real kitchen experience, and a genuine love for the craft. Over time, I developed a culinary voice that takes familiar dishes and gives them a polished, personal point of view.
Through Chef John Caters, I provide private chef services, catering, intimate dinners, brunches, custom menus, and weekly meal prep. I help clients take the stress out of food by creating menus that make sense for their event, budget, and overall experience.
What sets me apart is my attention to detail. I care about flavor, plating, timing, portions, packaging, and how the food makes people feel. I’m not just cooking to follow trends — I respect the craft, the technique, and the story behind the food.
I’m most proud of continuing to build my brand with purpose, even through challenges. Every client who trusts me with their event, celebration, or weekly meals reminds me why I do this.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my audience on social media has been a learning process. I started by simply sharing my food, my plates, and the work I was proud of. Over time, I realized social media is not just about posting food — it is about telling the story behind the food.
My audience has grown through consistency, presentation, and showing the care I put into my craft. I share plated dishes, client work, meal prep, private dinners, and behind-the-scenes moments so people can see the process, not just the final result.
I’m still building and learning, but I try not to let numbers define the value of my work. My focus is on staying authentic, professional, and consistent.
My advice to anyone starting out is to post with intention, show your personality, and make it clear what you offer. Don’t copy everyone else. Find your own voice, keep improving, and remember that a small audience that truly supports you is more valuable than a large audience that doesn’t connect with your brand.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
keep in touch with clients by being consistent, professional, and personal. For me, communication is a big part of the experience. Whether it’s through Instagram, email, text, or follow-ups after an event, I want clients to feel like they are being taken care of from start to finish.
I also try to build loyalty by being dependable. People come back when they know the food will be good, the presentation will be strong, and the service will be handled with care. I pay attention to client preferences, dietary needs, special occasions, and feedback so each experience feels personal.
Social media also helps me stay connected by sharing new menus, meal prep updates, behind-the-scenes content, and finished dishes. It gives clients a way to stay engaged with the brand even when they are not actively booking.
For me, brand loyalty comes from trust. If people know you care, communicate well, and consistently deliver quality, they remember that — and they come back.
