Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Johnathan O’Gilvie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Johnathan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
I’ve been blessed to have incredible people around me my whole life so it’s hard for me to narrow the single most kindest thing someone has done for me.. But one moment that always stuck with me is being given a keyboard from a family friend; Aunty Mel. My mom had always exposed us to a variety of creative outlets growing up. That being said, when I was much younger we had a keyboard in our home, but before I had actually taken a real interest in learning I think it died or something. When I was 14 I gained a whole new interest because I was hearing piano songs and thinking man I want to be able to play that. I grew up in the church, so every week I’d go and spend most of my time playing the piano there. It actually just occurred to me that I would only practice one day out the week.. the only time I could, at church. Me and some friends from church, including Aunty Mel’s daughter, formed a band. We’d practice over at their house some Friday nights and we’d write songs or just jam or whatever. Aunty Mel knew I didn’t have a keyboard of my own so she gave me one. She’s always been a genuinely sweet and God fearing woman with pure intentions yet I never expected it. I’ll always be grateful to her for that cause practicing one day out of the week vs anytime I want clearly changed the way I played for the better.
Johnathan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an artist.. I write songs and put them out for people to hear. I also produce beats and play keyboard/synthesizers. I’ve been a music lover my whole life so in a sense I’ve kind of have always been in this realm. My love for music and hunger for knowledge made my growth easy.. It was never so disciplined up until maybe high school when I started playing for the different choirs. I truly the believe the best way to learn is to learn songs you love! I would be so determined to get pieces down just cause I enjoyed playing and also hearing. I’ve offered different services over the years, but now in efforts to focus on my own music I’ve narrowed it down to producing for others, and doing session musician work. I would say my ear is above average so from choosing the sounds to playing the actual music, I do well in getting exactly what the client is looking for. Apart from that, you can check out my music anywhere under Johnathan O’Gilvie.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me personally it’s just doing what I enjoy doing. Although it’s necessary at times, I can be really bad at doing things I don’t want to do.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I first started releasing music with my best friend as a duo by the name of Co-Op. As of 2018 I started releasing music solo under Johnathan O’Gilvie. The biggest changes was more workload and no one to confirm like is what I’m doing working? We all doubt ourselves sometimes so it’s great working with another dependable ear. These days I hardly collaborate with anyone when it comes to my own work, which in turn has brought me to trust myself way more.
