We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Johnathan Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Johnathan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
There have been a couple of songs that have been very meaningful to me. It would truly be a tie between “In My Element” and “Puzzle”. I released “In My Element” on Jan. 3rd of 2022 and it means a lot to me because this felt like me becoming one with my style of music. With the creation of this project, I began to develop this upbeat, happy style of lofi hip-hop that incorporates these infectious percussion sounds that can bring out the rhythm of the song. I really think that this is one of my best projects because this feels cohesive to me and it feels like one solid work of art instead of a bunch of random songs thrown together.
The second project, “Puzzle”, is a song that was released on June 11th, 2021 and this one is just a song that speaks to my spirit. I made the song later in 2021 and was planning to sell it but I made the decision not to after I started drawing this picture on a friend’s iPad which ended up becoming the art cover for the song. I listened to this song late nights before I dropped it and I was going through a lot with the death of a dear friend on my mind. This song made me think of all the people who make me the person I am now. From the people who grew up with me to the newer group of friends that I had made recently all these people are the puzzle pieces to who I am.
Johnathan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
YOOOOOOO! My name is Johnathan AKA PurpleMonkey Entertainment or PME for short. I am a Music Producer located in Fayetteville, NC and I have been producing since 2018. I started producing my senior year of high school and have been on a roll ever since. Music has been in my life since I was a little kid from dancing and singing at my church to being in the regular and gospel choir in my high school. I have had this love for music for a while and I believe it can speak to the soul. Music is able to help people feel better whether that be recovering from a panic attack or even helping people with episodes of depression. As a producer, it is my job to provide music to rappers, singers, and songwriters to compose a complete piece of music. I have been credited for the creation of multiple theme songs for podcasts like The Xbox Drive, Nintendo Drive, and Playstation Drive from Carpool Gaming and four podcasts from Save The Game Media. I am extremely proud of all of my work whether it’s good or bad it shows my progress as a creator of music so people can go back and actually listen to the start and see how far I have come. My brand is really all about loving what you do and having fun doing it. I want my music to be an extension of me and so far I have achieved that. I would love it if yall checked me out. Who knows you may end up finding your new favorite producer.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Seeing people’s reactions to the music I make. It is so rewarding and inspiring to see people enjoy my music to the extent that they have. I have been on people’s Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year and it shows that my music is good and people actually enjoy it. My music has even touched bases in places not in the US which has given me the chance to have friends and connections in these foreign places. Music is universal so if its good it’ll touch people in ways that most cant even imagine. I”m just happy people enjoy it!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
FEED THE FAMILY! I want to be able to live off of what I love doing and I will keep pushing until it happens. I want to give to the ones who helped me at my lowest, so we can all eat in the end. Gotta feed the family.
