We recently connected with John Winlock Jr and have shared our conversation below.
John, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I used to weigh almost 300 lbs. and spent most of my fitness journey seeking weight loss.
My desire to weigh less led me down an unhealthy path to beating my body into injury, constant plateaus, and mental fatigue.
On my last injury, I took time away from physically abusing my body through exercise and educated myself on why I keep getting injured.
This is how I became a trainer. I learned that I was doing physical movement wrong, and I wanted to help others like me who weren’t being led correctly do it right.
I started at the basic level of becoming a Certified Personal Trainer through NASM, then educated myself on weight loss but found the real meat and potatoes of this thing through Corrective Exercise and Performance Enhancement education.
Why? After I achieved my weight loss goal my body still felt like a stiff board and even though my technique was good there were still aches and pains.
The continued education helped me understand the why and how’s to correct and improve. This changed the dynamic in how I decided I wanted to help people.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is John D. Winlock Jr. I’m a Certified Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). I specialize in helping people manage their weight, move pain-free, and exercise with confidence.
The reason I entered this industry is because in the beginning of my fitness industry I learned that I was doing things wrong which could have been a leading reason to how I injured myself during the time I decided to educate myself on proper body mechanics when exercising. I learned that what we had missing at the current gym location was an instructor teaching us proper technique. The workouts were amazing but I and the people I exercised next to daily needed more. So, I offered to teach and educate people but was required to be a certified trainer first. So I pursued the required education to become one and to this day 8 years later I’m still helping people.
I’m proud of the person I’ve become. Becoming a Wellness Coach taught me so much about myself, things to love, things to change, and helped me create a lifestyle for myself that is rewarding in many aspects.
My brand StayBNU (Stay Being You) means exactly that. I enjoy helping people find that better version of themselves so they can live a life that is rewarding and fulfilling to them on their terms; with joy.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Other things that have helped me become more successful are becoming open-minded and having compassion for myself and those I serve.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The service I provide my clients is what I believe helped me build my reputation. Be customer focused first showed my clients that I care about their progress, what their aim is, and how we will get there together. Treating them like humans.
By doing so my clients have spoken about me to other people and continue to bring me more business because they believe in my practice and the services that I provide.
