We were lucky to catch up with John Torres recently and have shared our conversation below.
John , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
It wasn’t until college that I realized I wanted to turn my hobby of songwriting and singing into a career. It was around my junior year at UCLA that I realized how important songwriting was to me, The time coincided with a number of live performances that I started giving at local bars and clubs around the Hollywood area. I was in a couple different performance groups and bands, and I would say that it was around that time that I really got the bug for live performance as well.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Though my career has had many twists and turns along the way, these days, I am primarily a songwriter for a living. Most recently, a musical I co-composed (Bronco Billy the Musical) made its UK premiere in London’s West End. And there are a number of other musical projects, both theatrical and cinematic that are in the pipeline as well.
I’m still also a performing songwriter, and have been releasing albums since I was in my 20s. I’ve put out several albums under my own name, but also under various other project names (such as Towers of Temple City and There There).
I also still do a lot of private events, and for the last several years have had a regular Sunday performing gig at a resort in Laguna Beach.
I have been thoroughly grateful to have been able to make a living doing what I love for this many years And while I’m still extremely hungry, I’m really proud of the work. I’ve done thus far.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think my overarching goal is a simple one. I just want to improve as a songwriter and a performer a little every day. I want my work to be something that I am proud of when I look back on it. And I think along those lines I want to get better at actually listening to that small voice inside myself, telling me which direction to go, which decisions to make on a day-to-day basis.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having a career inuaic has had so many rewards that it’s hard to pin one down as being the “most”. And I think there are two that are sort of tied.
The first has to be the independence, and the time that I have been able to spend working on creative project. As well as focused on things like my family, my health, and my home. I’ve been extremely fortunate in that regard,
The second has to be the insane range of experiences, amazing relationships, and destinations that a career in the arts has given me. I’ve gotten to meet so many wonderful people, and travel to so many interesting places, and I’m extremely grateful for that.
