We recently connected with John Shokohi and have shared our conversation below.
Hi John, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I started Stormwater Pros in 2020 to provide developers and contractors with a more affordable and efficient Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) service.
SWPPP regulations in the state of California are simple and easy to comply with when you are familiar with the entire stormwater process, know what you are doing and can work efficiently, and know the right people within the industry to help maintain compliance and resolve any issues that may arise throughout the duration of construction.
Stormwater Pros differs from the rest of the SWPPP consulting industry because we have our client’s best interest in mind, and help them find ways to cut their stormwater costs while maintaining SWPPP compliance, and provide the most efficient and affordable SWPPP service for their projects. Ultimately, Stormwater Pros maintains a low overhead, which allows us to help our clients save time and money on their project’s SWPPP requirements.
We succeed when our clients succeed!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started working in the stormwater SWPPP industry in 2016 when I began working for a civil engineering company in San Diego. I was fired in 2020, and started Stormwater Pros shortly after to help developers and contractors save time and money on SWPPP. During my time working for the engineering firm, I realized how most developers and contractors resented SWPPP because the requirements do not pertain to their actual project’s bottom line, and how expensive and timely SWPPP services costs.
I knew that as an individual with no overhead and a bright personality, I could provide a much more affordable and efficient service, helping people save time and money, and ultimately making the stormwater process more enjoyable for developers and contractors throughout California.
I’m proud to say that within the first 4 years of operation, Stormwater Pros has helped over 50 clients tackle their project’s SWPPP requirements, and more importantly, saved them all a large chunk of time and money throughout the process. From initial plan preparation throughout the duration of construction, Stormwater Pros handles our client’s SWPPP requirements and takes the hassle off their hands, so they can focus their time and energy on the actual construction of their projects.
Stormwater Pros’ appreciates all of our client’s and potential client’s time and consideration, and we look forward to continuing to provide the best and most efficient SWPPP services for our clients, and continuing to help them save time and money on stormwater.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Helping our client’s save time and money on SWPPP, taking their project’s stormwater requirements off their hands for a much lower cost than the industry standard; ultimately simplifying the entire SWPPP process and making it more affordable and enjoyable.
When you know what you are doing and have good connections within the industry, you can help a lot of people streamline their SWPPP processes and focus on the development of their actual project.
My knowledge, experience, work ethic, and positive attitude have helped me build a strong reputation within the building industry. People don’t usually remember you for what you do or what you say, however, they will most likely remember you for how you make them feel.
I truly enjoy helping others and I look forward to continuing to do so with Stormwater Pros.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Other than helping people first hand; Getting involved with the Building Industry Association (BIA), networking, helping advocate for developers upcoming projects by sponsoring events and volunteering my time to support the BIA, has really helped grow the Stormwater Pros brand and generate new business.
Again, just offering to help and finding ways to advocate for existing and potential client’s projects has helped me achieve success and establish lifelong relationships with some amazing people,
I wouldn’t be where I am today or who I am today if it wasn’t for all my amazing clients, mentors, and other professionals within the industry.
