We were lucky to catch up with John Root recently and have shared our conversation below.
John, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
In photography every one with a good cell phone and a basic editing program thinks that they are a photographer. It takes a lot of calculation and thought in order get a good photo, composition, lighting, shutter speed, ISO and knowing how that works together to get a good photograph, knowing all of that is great but seeing the “art” is extremely important if you can’t do then it lacks as art and good or even a great photograph.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Since 1989, I’ve been capturing moments through photography. My work spans various genres, including bands, events, product shots, and portraits – from family and senior photos to artists, musicians, and professionals. My journey began in the military as a photographer, and I further honed my skills at the Art Institute of Colorado, earning a degree in photography. I am passionate about freezing those fleeting, unforgettable instants. My work has been featured in publications such as Xposer Magazine, Denver, Colorado; Music Buzz; Colorado, Rock City News, Hollywood, California; Westword, Denver, Colorado; Revolver Magazine; The Guardian, Ft. Lewis Washington; Heavy Magazine, Germany. I’ve also created liner photography for bands like Moore, Fire Sign, Grind Cat Grind, Immortal Sÿnn, and many others. I have had my photography in VFW Post 1 gallery and have had my photographs on Congressman and a Senator’s office wall during their congressional sessions. Portraiture is my first love in photography, working with people to bring out their absolute best self.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I’ve never let go of my inner child. I allow myself to be silly and ridiculous, so when I look at something, I might see a comic book setting or a noir moment. I examine the entire scene and then smaller details to find the image. I always tell myself to “see art.” I look at shadows and the way people move, and I never fear making a mistake, as sometimes those are the best pictures of the session.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To be a successful photographer, artist, and person, I will never stop carrying my camera and searching for the next great picture. I aspire to be respected in my field, and my reputation for honesty, creativity, and continuous growth reflects my unwavering commitment to learning and creating.
