We were lucky to catch up with John Robbin recently and have shared our conversation below.
John, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
-The first thing I had to learn was how to sew. It started when my auntie gave me one of her sewing machines toto get started. I was too excited but before I could start I had to first learn the machine, and that came through watching a lot of YouTube videos. Honestly, a lot of the things I’ve learned came from YouTube videos and a lot of trail & error. Once I got the hang of working the machine, everything else came with a lot of practice.
-With always being a student of designing, I don’t think there would’ve been a way to speed this journey up. In my opinion, the only possible thing that could’ve sped this up would have been if what I knew now I knew back then.
-The obstacles that stood in my way, and still stand in my way, is not knowing what I don’t know. With me being self-taught, I feel there are a lot of things that I still have to learn, but don’t necessarily know what they are exactly.
John, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is John Robbin and I was born & raised and currently reside in Atlanta, Ga. I started my fashion journey my senior year of college back in 2018/2019. It started with a brand I had back then called “Advnxd.” The brand consisted of screen printed apparel, and that lasted until a little after I graduated. I liked the brand, but I felt there was more I could do to really put a part of me into every piece I made. After some rebranding, and learning a new skill, The brand known now as “John Robbin” was created. The brand allows me to create what I want without limitation, and it allows me to express myself through fashion.
The brand “John Robbin” is a handmade Luxury high fashion clothing line for men and women. For women we test the boundaries of what’s considered sexy, appropriate, or risky. We don’t feel you have to be covered up to be considered appropriate, and you don’t have to be naked to be sexy. The beauty of being a designer brand is we have no limitations. We make anything from everyday apparel to custom commission 1/1 pieces for you, fashion shows, or for any event you can think of.
Since the creation of “John Robbin” I’ve been in 8 fashion Shows, including a BMF Celebrity Expose here in Atlanta, created hundreds of custom pieces, been published in two magazines, and was featured on Tv in the Paragon 2.0 fashion Show.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect in being a designer is the fact that I get to be free. Life is full of rules and restraints and we all need an escape from that in my opinion. With designing there are no rules. you’re able to create whatever makes you feel happy and free.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My most effective strategy to growing clientele is to put yourself out there. For me doing shows help grow my business because they put me right in front of people. Especially with the shows being in different places for different people they give me the opportunity to network with tons of people, not to mention they allow for my pieces to be seen by new eyes every time.
