We were lucky to catch up with John Polk recently and have shared our conversation below.
John, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I currently am a full-time entertainer. It started when I was laid off in 2013. I hustled to find work musically to make ends meet while looking for another job and noticed that I was making just about the same amount of money from music as I was with traditional employment. So I never looked back.
No it’s not always easy but has gotten better over time. I’ve learned many tricks of the trade from some of the best in the business and have applied that knowledge along with incredible work ethic to not only maintain but succeed.
The best advice ever given to me was “If you don’t take yourself seriously, how will you ever expect anyone else to? Wish I would have known/applied that sooner but once I did, I really turned the corner

John, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Music has been a part of my life as far back as I can remember, singing and playing drums in church. I carried this into adulthood, playing in churches while serving in the military. It wasn’t until around 2012 when I began taking it more seriously and started looking at it is a means of income.
Today I serve in many capacities as both a musician and entertainer that can “take you to church” or have you dancing the night away! As an entertainer, I am grateful and honored to be versatile and able to provide entertainment solutions for events of all kinds.
The main thing I would want people to know is that, if you call for me, you won’t have to watch the door. I have years of being recognized as reputable. I’m going to be on time, I’m going to do what is asked with excellence and a great attitude.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I provide such a resource now as co-founder of an artist and network support group called ForTune, which is a play on words. I wish this resource was available in my journey! But I’m grateful for those I met along the way who freely gave advice and critique, even when. It was hard to hear

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect I’ve of being a creative is being able to see something through from start to finish. It’s watching something go from vision to fruition. It’s even more fun when you get to do it like-minded people who are competent at what they do also
