We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful John Michael Rouchell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with John Michael below.
John Michael, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects that I have worked on was working with the Walt Disney Company, specifically Imagineering, on the ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure based upon the Princess and the Frog story. This ride was to replace Splash Mountain, a ride that has been in the parks for over 30 years. Thinking of the potential longevity of the work was incredibly fulfilling. Secondly, producing music that authentically reflected my hometown of New Orleans was a duty that created a larger responsibility and purpose within me. Lastly and most importantly, working on a project that engaged and thrilled my daughter is a drug that I will forever chase. To date, this project was one of the most incredible honors and privileges of my life. I am so grateful for Terence Blanchard’s trust in producing this project as well as the trust and partnership with Disney Imagineering. This project will forever be a landmark for me.
John Michael, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is John Michael Rouchell. I am a Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum selling music producer, songwriter, and composer. Additionally I have an MBA in Strategy and Data Analytics from Tulane University. I have been a professional in the music and entertainment industry since the age of 15. I like to think of myself as the glue between creative and business. Whether it is tailoring a sound and an aesthetic to a brand, designing and composing themes for a film, or creating world class product for recording artists, my mastery of creativity and analysis is my unique value proposition.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There is no cavalry coming…you are the cavalry.
Maybe it was too many stories of Prince Charming…maybe I hoped to be seen by others…who knows. All I know is that the well of strength and power within you is 100x what outsiders can offer you. The quicker that you can find your center; the better.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am first and foremost an audience member with a rabid thirst for knowledge. Few things make me more fulfilled than analyzing what specific qualities make someone/something special/unique then designing product around that magic to highlight what I view as special to ultimately shine that magic to the world. I am a massive believer in creating from the inside out in a bespoke way. Fostering and empowering bravery is the foundational element of all that I do.
