Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Michael Morgan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
John Michael, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I think every business owner has had moments or days when they think about packing it all up and getting a regular job. I’ve had those thoughts but they never last more than a few seconds. The truth is, I couldn’t be happier as a business owner. The risks and stress are worth it. Freedom is my greatest motivator. All the hard work of running a business is paid off with the ability to travel whenever I want. I get to spend more time with my kids. The thoughts of getting a regular job come in when you’re exhausted from the constant decision-making that comes from owning your own business. The to-do list never ends. There’s always something that you can do and something that needs to be done. In that way, a regular job sounds appealing. But I wouldn’t be able to live the lifestyle I want with a regular job. We couldn’t homeschool our kids or travel often. The impact I can have by being of service to others would be limited.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I help entrepreneurs get and keep momentum. I do this through coaching, books, and public speaking. We focus on helping them with their mindset, habits, marketing, and brand. This has included large companies such as Starbucks, Disney, and Google, but also thousands of small businesses and entrepreneurs. So many entrepreneurs are closer than they realize to a breakthrough. But they self-sabotage with doubt, fear, and bad habits. We fix all of that. There are a lot of coaches in the world. I’m most proud of our longevity, I’ve done this for 15 years now, and our retention. Our clients stay with us for over 7 years on average. Many have been with us for more than a decade. If what we do didn’t work, that wouldn’t be the case. I think what also sets me apart from other coaches is that I’ve been in the entrepreneur’s shoes. I’ve built businesses outside of my coaching company. I’ve hired, fired, led teams built brands, and everything else that comes with running a business.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When it comes to social media, frequency and consistency are always talked about as the key ways to build and grow. They are absolutely critical to doing social media effectively. But what gets lost in the conversation is relevancy. That’s the secret key to social media success. You can post 5 times a day every day for years and not see any growth. Your content has to be relevant to your audience. Start with knowing who you want in your audience. Then get to creating what those people want and need. What would make them smile? What would make them laugh? What interests them? What would help them today? The better you can answer these questions, the better your content will be. The more relevant your content is, the more you’ll see your audience grow. This is true of all topics, industries, and platforms.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The more an entrepreneur or business owners can work on themselves, the better their businesses will be. I highly recommend pausing the business books and podcasts for a season and start diving into personal growth and self-improvement. The book Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz changed my life. It should be required reading for everyone. The concept of the book is helping you shift how you see yourself. Too many people fail to realize that you can’t outperform your self-image. If you want to grow, your identity needs to grow as well. This book is the best tool for helping you on that path.
