We caught up with the brilliant and insightful John Mahr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

John, appreciate you joining us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?

In my opinion there is nothing more rewarding than parenting. Money can come and go but the values and ethics you instill in your children is something that’s generational. I grew up working with my father as early as I can remember. I was raised if you wanted to succeed you had to work hard and nothing is given to you.

My father owned a successful business in town for almost 20 years before he retired. He was a great business man and I helped support his business for almost 10 years. Now I get to do the same with my son. Behind every successful man there’s a family there to support him.

There’s nothing more satisfying than getting up every day and getting to work with your son and knowing that you’re helping to build a strong financial future for him. Obviously family businesses aren’t always peaches and cream but the good always outweighs the bad.

I’m a firm believer that strong foundations are built when you have the support of your family. In my case my son is the pinnacle of my support system and together we have had some great success.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’ve been working in carpentry since I was a kid. My father was more of a business man but I got the skills from my grandfather who did woodworking and highly skilled at his craft.

Custom Home Expert provides a wide variety of services. We do home improvements, renovations and new construction. We offer kitchen remodeling, bathroom remodeling, countertops, cabinetry, flooring, carpentry and build full additions. We can even build 3 and 4 season sunrooms. We do it all. Instead of having to contract multiple sources we can go in and knock out anything a client needs renovated, remodeled or added.

Our customers love the fact that we are a small family owned business. It gives a lot of our clients a sense of nostalgia. We are also a hard working crew so our main focus is to get the job finished with as little disturbance to the client as possible. My team always shows up on time and keeps an organized and well maintained job site.

We have clients that continue to work with us which says a lot about how we operate and our work.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?

Keep your crew happy and make sure they have more work than they can handle. It gives them drive and a peace knowing that they have longevity in the company.

I met my business partner when he was fresh out of the womb. My son is my right hand. There is no better business partner or anyone I would trust more.
