Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
John, appreciate you joining us today. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
I started to DJ from just finally sitting down with myself an trying . As a creative, for me , ideas can come with anxiety. So from the start it was having a self talk of confidence. After that it’s all about the vibe , the look and the message you want to convey. For me i always loved different genres of music, finding out that and open format DJ is just that type of DJ gave me ease.
It was a couple months into practice until i realized that just getting out there and trying is the best way to become and shape the idea.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first got into the Dj world it was from my friend and constant collaborative partner Sam Morykwas. He gave me old controller and after that i just practiced everyday.
Another Friend was a bar manager at the time and had a weekly DJ rotation and after some practice i joined in. After a few gigs with friends i started to network more and get different gigs. Some i didn’t like they were definitely needed for the experience .
As A DJ i provide everything from my own speaker setup flyer to my own flyers.
I think what sets me apart is my energy. I am definitely in my own world at this point in my career . I am not afraid to dance vibe and sing along with my music . I think seeing the DJ genuinely enjoy themselves is key.
A few things i am proud of.
•During the pandemic of we hosted a weekly show on zoom called Wednesday Night Vibes that we did for free. It really was an amazing experience and escape for us and so many people that were having a tough time through this time.
-We had state reps, artist , teachers, other DJs on the show. and many random connections we wouldn’t think would happen .
-We reach well over 100+ people at one point. It also lead to in person shows and even a commercial for the Detroit Tigers.
A more recent more personal proud moment is I had a two year residency at Willis Show Bar, During this time i brought in a lot of up and coming DJs that felt should have been getting more gigs and eyes on them a chance to spin, Some night i would just take off and let them get the night themselves. A lot of them went on to have there own residence and i love it
I just want ppl to know that my brand is about Vibes, Feeling, and musical Adventures . I love to look at it as and empty canvas, and whatever picture or color i paint with my music is all from emotion and energy
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
the one thing i wish i knew early is you don’t the extra expensive equipment to get your vibe across . Also, to take the risk and invest in yourself . Its never a risk if you love what you do
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My genuine spirit. Im never into anything other that good vibe and mentorship advice. alway willing to help and give ideas. I think a bit of selfishness is needed but also i feel gatekeeping isn’t the way. There is enough creative space for us to all thrive.
