Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Hunt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi John, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
Sometimes I feel this answer should be some big song and dance about many things but often I find myself coming back to some simple mantras that have helped me along my professional and personal journey – “do work, bitch less, stack more” – the last part hits with a legacy aspect – “stack more” isn’t just something about making money…..for me, it’s more about memories with my wife and boys, going out to see the world, trying to satisfy the desire to succeed with making sure every client is as satisfied as possible…..I hope my family feels that I was there for them through everything and put them in a place to succeed in life without me there. In business, I’m not sure if all my companies will continue on once I’m gone….some of them are pure passion projects for me that have turned into full time entities of their own…I hope my boys want to travel the world the fly fish….but they may not have the same passions as I do….and I think they know I want them to explore whatever it is they find passion in. Legacy is more than memories of a person…..I think everyone will say that I “made my own way” but I hope people along my journey can say that I helped make their journey brighter, more enjoyable, and that I left a dent in their journey to remember that I want them to succeed.
John, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m spent my time since college working through start ups, organizations, and, eventually, becoming self employed and have been now for 14 years. I’ve always had a passion for sales & marketing but event planning, digitally marketing, incubation of ideas, and the roll out phase of business has been some of my strengths in numerous projects. Today, I handle most of the day to day and digital aspects for Moccasin Fly Club which I started in 2018 and now we manage trips, host trips, and work with over 17 countries and 30 plus outfitters around the world for fly fishing, spin fishing, and hunting. We also have a clothing line and lodging avenues in some locations. We help people enjoy the outdoors….plain and simple. If you want to go somewhere to fish or hunt or anything else outside….we plan it and help you make it happen from Alaska to Argentina.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
“Change is not merely necessary in life. It is life” – I have a fortune cookie paper on my desk…it’s been there for over a decade. Adapting is the best quality to have in the self employed realm. You start with a goal and during the journey to that goal….things change….they always do. I started a company in Aspen, CO that follows music, fashion, and events…within a year we were covering 8 cities in the US…..and then we turned in an event planning company because we knew what music, fashion, and events people wanted to attend……as anthropologists of the street we turned into how clients could capture the “who, what, and when” for their brands…..3 years after it started it turned into a consulting firm offering services for everything from content creation to event planning to social media management to training…..it started in 2010 and still to this day it thrives in areas where we adapt to something new for a client. Pivoting doesn’t mean something big…..the smallest pebble can still send waves across the pond.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth was always a big thing during my college courses – networking, alumni interactions, and word of mouth. I played Division 1 sports on the East Coast and through my willingness to be anywhere anytime for my coaches or alumni, I was put into a lot of situations that helped me develop a network that was big. I was born in the Midwest, went to collagen Baltimore, moved to San Diego and had a blast on the West Coast and now reside in Colorado and have over a decade in the mountains. Growing a clientele takes time, consistency, and focus – you can meet a lot of people digitally now but that doesn’t change a smile and hand shake……taking time to talk about things with new people….My strength has been finding a way to help solve problems with the large network I have…..accountants, lawyers, printers, sign makers, and anything else that you may need as a business owner….I have the person and those connections help all of our clientele grow….referrals are the back bone of a solid network which is all drive by word of mouth…and trusting whomever is the mouth
