Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Harrington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
John, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I think it happened when I first shot for a magazine back in 2018. I did the photoshoot for Emerald Coast Magazine and one of the images was a double truck in the magazine, seeing my image spread across both pages with the copy and text made me so excited. Eventually more and more assignments were given to me and I realized I was hooked on the process of producing the photoshoot, shooting it, and then seeing it physically. I was hooked from there on.

John, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi my name is John Harrington and I am a photographer. I picked up a camera for the first time in 2016 in my senior year. A lot of really bad events happened in my life and kinda tanked my mental health. I wanted to escape my schoolwork and stay out of the house. I ended up asking the yearbook teacher if I could borrow one of their cameras and photograph a football game. Never felt so excited and was hooked on shooting everything and anything I could! a couple of months later I had one of my images on the front page of the local newspaper and it just kept growing. Eventually, that turned into magazines, collegiate football and basketball, companies, and more.
I think what sets me apart from others is the obsession I have. I’m always researching and shooting. I hold myself to high standards and don’t stop til I’m satisfied and make sure my clients are satisfied as well. I like to pride myself in creative logistics and creative problem-solving because a client comes to you when they have a need or a problem.
I believe potential clients, followers, and or fans should know that I try to give the most authentic view of the world I see and my authentic version of the work I create for myself and for my clients. I try my best to stand apart with my personal experience and create images that showcase the present state in what I believe is its authentic form.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is being able to meet so many different groups of individuals between my personal work, my commissioned work, and daily life, I get thrown into some interesting environments and get to meet some fantastic people along the way. I am allowed access to a lifestyle or person’s daily life that I most likely would not be able to see into. I get to ask questions and get to know them intimately in a short amount of time. People are addicting to meet because everyone’s story is different even if they grew up across the street from one another.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
For me, the best resource has always been asking questions to professionals or people I admire. My mentor told me two things “the squeaky wheel always gets heard” and an important question to ask of anyone with a longstanding career is “what did you do to get here?” or “how have you kept up this reputation for so many years?” Those two questions alone have gotten me some of the most profound responses from not only photographers but subjects I have photographed. Especially for someone my age it has allowed me to enter circles, I don’t think I could’ve entered without those questions.
