Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Gearty. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
John, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Absolutely, we do a lot of things differently than the industry standards for music and virtual reality. First and foremost, we’re combining music and VR in a way nobody else is really embracing. We see VR as a spherical canvas on which to paint our animated visual representation of the music. In contrast, most VR music experiences are little more than a stage performance of the artist recorded in 3D. We think of VR quite differently.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well, it’s a long story! I’ve dreamed about widespread VR most of my life but it’s taken about 20+ years to build the supporting technologies needed to bring it to the masses. I’ve spent most of my career working on related graphics like computer aided design (CAD), hardware engineering and machine learning software until bringing them all together at Apple where I worked on the Vision Pro. Now we have a high quality dual 4K device for the masses to enjoy rich VR experiences.
I founded PulseJet Studios after leaving Apple and built a studio around making amazing immersive music experiences. We want artists and fans to know that we intend to push the creative limits of VR for music and wrap the artist’s vision around your head. Our first VR Album is Björk’s Vulnicura which is very representative of the avant-garde approach we take every day here at PulseJet Studios.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
We bring a thorough, detailed, quality-focused approach to everything we do. It’s easy to get lazy on aspects of creative design, CG, or music but we’re never happy with cutting corners. When we push for detail in every aspect of a project, we find magic.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Sort of. I worked on music-related VR concepts at Apple as a “side project” on nights and weekends which wasn’t my main job. The funny thing is, Apple already overloads you with night and weekend work and doesn’t give room for passion projects. So it was all overtime and ultimately I couldn’t execute on my plans at Apple. That’s when I left to start my own studio.
