Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Fulton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
John, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Sometimes you can learn another craft unknowingly. Although I’m an actor now, music has always come first and learning that craft has led me to my current status. The rhythm, tempo, pitch, beat and feel of the music can be applied to acting. I moved to LA to be near creative people and do creative things and only focused on writing songs. Learning the craft of songwriting helped me perform on a friends internet talk show in 2006. Doing the work for free, not asking anything in return led to Animal Planet discovering me as a songwriter and then seeing what I never saw: myself has a host. After the show Must Love Cats left the air, my devotion to songwriting and hosting led me to acting. The craft is the career, the craft must always be the center driving force behind the goal and the goal is to create every day. If we can be artists everyday, that’s all we should be.

John, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
John Fulton was born in Topsfield, MA where he was the non starting captain for his basketball team. After his dream of playing in the NBA sizzled out, he went to University of Rhode Island where he played in a band called Alula and was a DJ for WRIU on a show called FULTON of JAZZ. After his dream of being an early morning jazz DJ sizzled out, he went to LA where he started a comedy band called The Fresh. After his dreams of touring in a comedy band sizzled out, he got a break in hosting Must Love Cats. After his dream of hosting a cat show sizzled out, he moved to commercials and TV which are sizzling. He currently plays in a new comedy band called Camp Friends. He lives in LA with his wife, son and two cats.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I was chosen to host Must Love Cats, there was a problem. Noone had heard of me. I had zero time on TV, no experience in entertainment and knew nothing about reality television. The network decided to have a “hostoff” with another host. We flew to Boston and each did a cold open, interview and a man on the street. When I got to the man on the street segment, there was another problem..It was raining and there were no men on the street. I found a statue and interviewed it for 10 minutes. I had nothing so had nothing to lose. When they made their decision, that moment was the key factor.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Acting is a social art. Just having an audition is the most rewarding aspect of acting because it signifies you’re part of the machine. Someone is getting paid to watch you act, to give you notes, to film you. It gives you the opportunity to show your interpretation of the character to a producer, ad agency, client, casting office and more people you may never meet. The reward is the opportunity to perform and being free of asking of anything in return.
