We caught up with the brilliant and insightful John Forse a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
John, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
When I was little and showing a strong interest in art, my parents got me in private art lessons with the Houston-based artist Michael Collins. They would drive me an hour or more, on Saturdays, to take lessons. It was a big investment to make in my interests, and so amazing of them to provide me with the opportunity to learn from a professional artist.
John, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Houston-based artist. I received my MFA in Painting from the University of Houston in 2014, and my BFA in Applied Design & Visual Arts from UHCL in 2009. Art making is the only thing I can imagine doing, as it means so much to me that it feels impossible to live my life without it. That’s why I am an artist; drawing, painting, collaging, sculpting. Sometimes these are commissions, or made with a particular audience in mind — like my art-themed comics for Glasstire.
There has always been an element of exploration in my work. That means experimenting with new materials and techniques, exploring new imagery, and pushing my craft. I’ve been able to work with a variety of clients on a variety of projects, and each has been an opportunity to grow as an artist.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Everything is a resource — there are new materials to work with, everywhere. Try painting on a found surface, or make a collage from food boxes. Try all the tapes and glues, even the ones they don’t sell in the art supply store. Spin in a circle until you find a good composition, and take photos of everything interesting.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support living artists.
