We were lucky to catch up with John Eubanks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi John, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Most of all my life, I had some involvement in music, arts, entertainment. Whether it was, choreographic dance, to gymnastics to drumming in various school bands, aside from education there was fun. However, I was always conditioned and driven to be able to provide for myself in a long sustaining career. Once God swayed these things in my favor, there was more time to not only dedicate but fund my ventures as an artist/creative. Since 2022, I have been professionally recording myself and releasing my art into the world. I am looking forward to what the future holds.
John, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is John! Atlanta born and raised; I arrived in Arizona in summer of 2022. My main reason for moving to the state was to further my supply chain management career after college. However, with post grad life there came with it a good amount of empty space. I found myself pondering most days, yearning for that thing that I loved and “wouldn’t feel like work”. Music was something I always turned to and had interest in and to my surprise, I was led to purchase my first home studio setup in early 2022. Since then, I have released 4 singles, a 6 track EP and performed in over 5 live music shows to showcase my art and talent. Although still wet behind the ears with my experience in the music industry, there have been a multitude of lessons and people I have met along the way to not only strengthen my abilities in music, but in creating independent art. Once again, I am more than exited for what the future holds for everything.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I would say a lesson I had to unlearn is my view towards quality in my work and others work as well. Most journeys, art forms and methods are individual to everyone. Most you can understand, others you cannot. What I had to remove was judgement from it all. Once I started down to path of creating music or directing and producing my videos and short film ideas, a plethora of puzzle pieces that were missing from the mosaic of creativity started to come to pass. Now, my view is more receptive to learning from others in their methods, views, portrayals, etc of what they put into the world. You never know what you may like! Also, it deepens the appreciation you have for the effort behind it all. Once you experience how much more time and difficulty comes into really crafting your vision, you burgeon you respect for the path! You gotta trust the process!
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Leveraging the power of social media interaction and promotion. A hurdle that I think everyone can agree is a difficult one to overcome (in everyone’s own right of course). I am more of a scroller rather than someone who posts. Having to get into the space of regularly promoting and posting about my art was and still is a hurdle that I am overcoming. The power of social media is very upfront in today’s marketing strategies, and I get caught up in how I should post and what it should look like. Will they care? Does this look cool? How relevant is this to me? Am I being annoying with all my posts? These are all questions that commonly ping-pong in my head about marketing myself. A constant reminder I have to bring up is that most supporters just want to see just something about what you have going on. Simplicity often times is all that you need when it comes to that.
