We recently connected with John Dusek III and have shared our conversation below.
John, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
My Parents, they taught me how to learn and always forgive me when I did something dumb, as long as I learned from it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The Book Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosak, is very insightful, as long as you don’t belittle the Poor Dad, he did what he was taught
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I bought my Dad’s farming operation when I was a teenager, after 5 years of paying 18% rates, I had to reassess what I was going to do for a living, so took self assessment of my skills/traits and set a goal of selling computers. I know nothing about computers but they where changing business, so I went to school to learn how to fix them with the premise that If I know how they worked I could explain and sell them to people. Turned into a great career of over 35 years in IT.
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
I have bought and sold many businesses and each one is an adventure. My biggest take away is to not get to emotional about it, stay calm and be prepared to walk away for any deal that doesn’t feel right.
