We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful John DiGirolamo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with John below.
John, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
In my book, It’s Not About the Predator, I detail how kids and teens are targeted online. Many parents don’t know about predator tactics and how easy it is to lure a child for illicit purposes. Parents and kids should be made aware of what the predators are doing and how they operate. This can be taught (Digital Safety) to both the teens and the adults. Most parents are not tech savvy with social media and newer programs popular with the 13-20 year age group.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was getting a lot of questions about how human trafficking is impacted by technology after I wrote It’s Not About the Sex. I realized that the predator tactics are similar if the criminal is looking for explicit pictures or sextortion. I want my readers to be armed with information and a plan on how to mitigate the risks on the internet. What sets my book apart from others is I also go over some of the cultural influences as well as common sense recommendations.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
You never know when an opportunity will arise. I was talking to a gentlemen who organized a small social group that met monthly. It was a small group that I did a talk for even though I realized the books sales would be minimal because of the size of the group. One of the attendees like the material I covered and knew a cable TV host and made an introduction. A few weeks later I was interviewed on his show!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Many authors are introverts, and you have to push yourself to also market the book. I cold call many people to try to get interviews and most ignore me or decline to interview me. I have to persevere in the face of apathy from others. You have to be self-motivated or you will find it too easy to give up. When you have a successful interview, it is all worth it.
