We caught up with the brilliant and insightful John Demartini a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
John, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
My six-step formula for scaling up productivity, meaning, and profitability.
Two weeks after I opened my business office I created a series of six-column forms by drawing five equally spaced lines down a series of 8.5 x 11 inch pieces of paper.
In column 1 to the far left, titled “Daily Action Steps”, I wrote an extensive list of every specific action step I took in a regular day over a three month period including those at home and work. These actions were very specific and detailed like making individual calls to clients and following up on their needs and / or progress – not broad vague generalities like just marketing or unspecified administrative duties.
In column 2 to the left, titled “How Much Income Does This Daily Action Step Produce Per Hour”, I wrote the most accurate estimate I could make of how much each daily action step actually produced per hour – extrapolating down to the hour for shorter or longer action steps. This was revealing and pointed out how many actions I was taking that were producing little to nothing and how I was majoring in minors and minoring in majors.
I then reprioritized the list from most productive and profitable to least. Productivity implied providing a product, service, or idea that was valuable enough to a customer that they would pay me handsomely for it.
In column 3 to the left, titled “How Much Meaning Does This Action Step Provide Me” on a 1 – 10 scale – 1 being low uninspiring action steps and 10 being high very inspiring action steps. I then reprioritized this list from most to least inspiring and meaningful. When actions steps are highly inspiring and meaningful I cannot wait to get up in the morning and provide them and serve the customer.
In column 4 to the right, titled “What Would Be The Total Cost If I Were To Delegate This Daily Action to A More Qualified and Engaged Individual Than Myself”. I calculated every cost involved in hiring such an individual in addition to their salary. I then prioritized this list according to spread between what it would produce vs cost the most per hour.
In column 5 further to the right, titled “How Much Time Per Day Does This Daily Action Step Take” I estimated the amount of time this action would take per average day for creating a clearer and more concise job description and for planning purposes.
In column 6 far to the right, titled “Final Prioritization” I then reprioritized the list from those most productive, meaningful and profitable to those least.
I then divided the final entire list into ten layers and created job descriptions accordingly and began hiring from the least to the most productive, meaningful, and profitable positions.
In 18 months I went from myself and one assistant to five executives and 12 employees and generated more than 10 x more net profit and liberated myself from all lower priority actions. I dedicated myself to doing the highest priority action steps that inspired me and that produced the most per hour and delegated what inspired others so I could extract surplus labor value out of other inspired individuals. I hired those individuals who were engaged and inspired to do what was not priority for me. It was highly liberating.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
From learned disabled with a speech impediment and high school drop-out, to ultrahigh net worth international presenter.
After living under a bridge and park benches and on the streets and in tents to now living on and partly owning one of the largest private yachts in the world.
After significantly failing my first test when trying to return to a school at age 18 and almost giving up on the mission and vision of being a great teacher traveling the world I made a commitment to memorize a dictionary 30 words a day until my vocabulary was strong enough (20,000 words) in two years to pass tests and then read effectively and excel as a top student and graduate professional school with honors. There was no turning back, no options but the outcome and primary objective I held in my heart and mind’s eye.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
A relentless pursuit of researching or acquiring quality and pertinent information that inspired others to achieve, fulfill their dreams and master their lives and sharing it with inspiration 287 to 426 times a year for five decades. I was willing to do whatever it takes, travel whatever distance, and pay whatever price to fulfill my mission of service of love across the globe. My marketing organically emerged – every presentation initiated new more distant presentations which networked me around the world. I read more, wrote more, spoke more and travelled more than anyone else was willing to do. I wrote dozens of books, produced over a hundred audio-video products and wrote thousands of articles for over 1500 magazines, did 9,000 radio , TV and social media interviews and worked more hours that most other speakers. I created original products, services and ideas that served human beings regardless of nationality.
