Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Dailey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
John, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve approached all of my artistic endeavors the same way, pretty much. Whether it’s recording an album or directing a music video, as an independent artist you have to be able to understand how to work within your budget/limitations and be able to get creative within those boundaries. Also just keeping a mental inventory of the resources you already have access to and how you can build something that can flourish creatively within the boundaries. If you really want to speed up the process then I recommend just making art and finishing it. A lot of people let their fear of failure prevent them from ever trying or completing anything but the only true way of getting experience is going through the motion and each step involved in doing so. You can go into any project prepared (please do) but you have to be able to pivot, trouble shoot and acclimate to your environment during any kind of production. Accept the chaos and just do your best to steer it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a neurotic mess who’s trying to process life through a more interesting lens. I like to compose and arrange music and make small films. I try to paint a sonic landscape for the pain and suffering of life as well as the love and beauty. I want to make sure I’m in on the cosmic joke and not take myself too seriously too.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I’m not unique in that I’ve been informed and molded by my favorite authors, directors, musicians and painters. However, I recommend that you find the artists that inspire you the most and do a complete breakdown and analysis of why you’re inspired by it. Figuring out why you’re moved by something is everything. If you can understand it then you can learn to manipulate it. It becomes a tool in your toolbox.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
What’d you just call me?
