We were lucky to catch up with John Blom recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi John, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My first breakthrough into the world of displaying my work in galleries. Came with my project of “Disrupting Landscapes”. The images were first shown at The Loosen Art gallery /Rome. Then at The Fotonostrum Gallery/ Barcelona/Spain.
I received a lot of press and magazine coverage for the shows.
Now working on new project “Escapes”.
My reaction to the presidential race and disinformation, in our country. Feeling that sometimes we just need to
escape, the constant television and social media coverage of useless information.
The new work was thought of during a portfolio review with. Debra Klompching. She found these images to be
interesting and thought provoking. That they should be built into a body of works.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an American fine-Art photographer, painter and printmaker, located in Cincinnati, Ohio. I first began painting in the 1970’s and have incorporated different mediums into my work over the years, including photography. I have attended the Tyler school of Art in Philadelphia, before going on to study at the University of Cincinnati. Where I earned a degree in Arts and Sciences. My work has been featured at numerous galleries around the world.
This recent surge in popularity has only happened, after years of work and experimentation. Usually based on my fine arts
background .
My current but not complete portfolio, can be found on social media. At jblom1951@instagram.com . Also I am on Facebook .
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Great question. I originally was driven by appreciation ,or maybe acceptance ,of my work. Especially by my peers. After years of learning photoshop and Lightroom. I was able to create more of the images I wanted to create.
Thanks to some good friends and mentors, I was able to achieve another level of capturing images too.
I invested in better equipment that would give me better images to work with. I found Nikon cameras that allowed me to focus
more on images, than with video, work best.
I am still driven to create even better works. I am still driven by my goal of having a solo show in a major gallery.
So there is always a mission to work toward.
Always learning is key.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think the best way to support artists in general . Is to buy their Art. Both locally and online. I think the biggest issue people have with that is , they don’t see or understand the value in it.
Maybe we need to revive the WPA from the FDR days. That was a great federal program. You would not have the abstract expressionists. Period. If not for the WPA.
Anyway I hope people will read and understand the artists they are drawn to. and pay whatever the price for that work.
Because Im pretty sure we earned it.
